Kiggly also makes beehive springs. You don't need chromoly seats and Ti Retainers unless you run the S3 cam which is for aggressive setups

will the GSC S1 work with the stock 9 turbo?
or should I just go ahead with the S2s?
thanks

From personal experience as most on here can attest, please do things right the first time. I recommend getting the S2s as you will more than likely never have to worry about swapping cams again. Originally Posted by mikeywick821

okay yeah, I want to do it right the first time, but Im only questioning myself, because reading the GSC website, they do not recommend it with stock turbo....Originally Posted by pure_evo

I ran great cams when I had the stock turbo on my last EVO8 and did not suffer any spool and the grunt down low was fantastic. Regardless of the stock-framed turbo, those S2s are a winner. Originally Posted by mikeywick821

If we were to limit the discussion to turbo spool up, then which is the better choice... the S1's or the S2's? Has anyone upgraded from the S1's to the S2's on their Evo and noticed a marked difference in turbo spool up?
Would their be much of a difference in boost threshold, and rate of spool difference between using the S1's or the S2's given the same car and the same turbo? I am considering ditching my old HKS cams and going to either the S1's or the S2's, but I want to improve spool up with my Red. Should I do the S1's or the S2's?

I, personally, have not done this. Since you boxed the topic in and wanted to focus only on spool up, the S1s would have the slight edge merely because it is a smaller camshaft. One of the reasons why people select the S2s over the S1s is because of the spool difference with the S2s being superior in the midrange and topend. For your FP Red, I believe that it would be choked out with the S1s and the S2s will keep a smile on your face.Originally Posted by sparky

do not go with s1's with an fp red. it is to small of a cam for that turbo. you will max out way early and not maximize mid to top end power. i could go on and on about how lobe, lift, profile all affect the power band of your car but im no expert and that isnt needed here.
there is almost no reason NOT to go with the s2s. I have them on a stock 8 turbo, and they will be fine with a bigger snail. Unless you are doing something like bink or joe above (think it was you, if not my bad) with built motor big turbo, s2s will be fine. the difference in spool is so slight it is not worth the sacrafice in power.
everyone i know who has had the s1s has swapped up. And if you are going to do cams, do valvetrain. so many threads and disucssions about whether it is needed or not and how some people get away with it etc. If your going to be in there doing cams, do everything at once and do it the right way.
Small price to pay vs a new block. i ordered my s2s from Adam at MAP (the man), and got the springs, seats, and retainers all at once. required, debatable, but not the expensive and worth the peace of mind up above 7.5k

Another question, is there anything wrong with getting Manley springs and retainers, as opposed to the GSC Beehive ones?
or do they all work the same?
thanks
