tob wont release

I am doing a clutch change as I type this, I cannot for the life of me get the tob to release with the transmission in the car, I can however get the new tob to release from my pressure plate out of car. I have been unsuccessful at removing the transmission from the car.. Anyone have any idea what I can do?.. Help asap if possible

Thats a good idea but I would use that as a last resort. Try using two skinny screwdrivers and twisting them simultaneously. Spray some pb blaster on it first that should help a bit too. If not, then youre going to have to remove it with the pressure plate like stated above.

may I add that the transmission is still bolted to the engine,I haven't been able to seperate it more than an inch maybe inch and a half.. I don't really have much room to get a wrench or ratchet in the service hole to loosen that pressure plate.. I am going to try tomorrow morning to use a die grinder and cut the diaphram..... haha hoping that if i cut all the fingers of the pressure plate i am hoping the pressure plate and tob will come out together and i can put the new everything in.... any other ideas are appreciated before i cut the fingers....

Lol no dont do that. The way you can reach the pressure plate bolts is with a 1/4 in drive ratchet. But before you do that, stick a screwdriver through the hole where the clutch fork goes through and through the inspection hole and twist both of them. Its easier with two people. The trans wont come out now because its still being held on to the pressure plate with the tob. Bolt it back up to avoid damage to the input shaft until you remove the tob from the pressure plate.

Aren't the pressure plate bolts usually bolted on and torqued to a decent amount of pressure??... if so.. I don't think 1/4 in drive ratchet would do very well in that situation. as for the screw driver trick, hasn't worked.. so we started breaking stuff off of the tob, the wavy disc, and the splined piece that grooves in with the pressure plate.

Also, it sounds like you have done this before, I completely spaced to get the torque specs for the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel, do you by chance know them off the top of your head?

this is my car:
06 evo ix gsr
(soon to have) act hdss clutch/pressure plate
(soon to have) streetlight flywheel

Dont know them off the top of my head but I think the pressure plate bolts dont require much torque from what I remember. Maybe 20 ft lbs? You can search they are around here somewhere, if not download the service manual. Itll have all the torque specs on there for you. On my tob I just needed one screwdriver from the top and I struggled a bit to get it to pop out of the pressure plate.

Edit: Look in the evolution torque specs thread.

Pressure plate bolts are torqued to 13lb ft, so those should come off quite easily.

1/4 in drive ratchet attempt does not work, socket is too big or not long enough

Turn the crank a bit using a 1/2 in drive then try to pop the TOB again. I just did my clutch a month ago and fussed with it for about an hour before I got it off. Prying on a different spot finally got it to release and it popped with ease. Practice with the new one off the car to get a feel for how easy it releases.

Just in case you haven't seen this.

Me and a friend did that for a few hours last night before deciding to get a dremel and cut the fingers, which is what we are doing now.. :/ we have turned the crank slighty and worked with the bearing but it just won't give..

That sucks that it's giving you so much trouble. Mine was aggravating, but it finally came loose. You are a brave man destroying the clutch like that while it's still on the car.

I have no other choice.. :/ but does that sound like what I need to do to get it off? Cut the fingers and then take trans out? (Just need some reassurance) haha

What do you mean you have no choice. You take the bolts off the pressure plate and it all comes apart. Cutting the fingers is just a dumb idea
