Buy a used Turbo????
Buy a used Turbo????
hey everyone,
I've had my evo for about a year now and im gonna upgrade my turbo (probably the fp black). There's someone selling a used one for about 1800 and it's sup. to include all the parts needed. What does everyone think? On one hand it's about $800 cheaper than the DBB from FP, but on the other hand, how do I know it hasn't been beat to hell? Just want y'all advice. Imma chick & I don't want to get ripped off. Thx 4 looking.

im always paranoid to buy used parts that get pure hell haha. i think it would have to be some low low miles in great shape and zero shaft play. I would just be extra careful!!! The new ball bearing fp's are supposed to give some quicker spool but im sure its worth 800$ i think the journal bearing fp's are like 1700 new?
a used turbo is generally a bad idea unless your getting an absolute smoking deal..... with turbos its hard to tell and it could end up being a paper weight. Buy new and don't worry.
Zero shaft play appears to be an opinion by sellers and most of them are too laxy to actually measure it. Dont trust anyone who has not actually measured the play with a gauge.

The problem with the journal bearing FP black is they make great power and that power is addicting! People who say they have a gently used turbo often don't know what that means, I'm certain they didn't monitor turbo shaft speeds to make sure they didn't over speed the turbo. If you are seriously interested in it see if the seller will send it to FP to verify condition, if everything checks out then you pay for the service and purchase the turbo, if it doesn't check out then they pay for the service and you don't buy the turbo. Or have the seller pay for the repairs necessary and you buy a like new turbo. Just my .02 worth. By the way, there are several very knowledgeable people in the Hampton area, search your regional section and see if anyone local would be willing to go look at it with you.

Used turbos are hit and miss... Once the FP turbo goes to the second owner, there is also zero warranty. The BB black may be more money up front, but you get a great warranty and if you factor in the longevity aspect then that should seal the deal.
However if the used black has no shaft play and checks out good, it could last for a good long while...

That's a very good advice. It may seem cheap in the beginning but may end up costing more in the end.
However, if she sends it to FP to be inspected, i think she should be good to go.
It's a hit and miss. If you're getting the turbo for a killer deal, worse case scenario just send it back to the manufacture and have it rebuilt. Sometimes that cheaper than having to buy a new one. Good Luck.
