Unlike many others on this forum i'm actually a A.S.E. certified master technician and a factory trained Mitsubishi master technician that works at a dealer,i do this for a living every day,and in my 15 plus years of experience i have yet to see more than 1 or 2 tensioners or pulleys fail on a 4G63,where exactly you get your info from is beyond me,but if you want to believe what some "VENDOR " wants to tell you that "you" need or just for the peace of mind go right ahead it's your money, waste away, but to say it's terrible advise,i don't think so,i depend on my experience to know what usually goes bad or doesn't.I have worked at 3 different Mitsubishi dealers in my time with Mitsu not even one offered pullies with their timing belt kits, that's from experience not hearsay.

If it gives you peace of mind by spending an extra 250 on pulleys and hydraulic tensioner to make someone elses pocket a little fatter then by all means do it.

When I did my first timing belt/ water pump service, I was lazy and didn't replace the timing belt idler pulley, SO guess what I was doing a month later I know more about my evo than the resident Mitsu mechanic ever will. Peace of mind > some mechanics "opinion". It's really easy to tell if a pulley is bad, and it's pretty rude to tell someone how YOU think they should spend their money

I think it's worth it to replace the idlers and tensioner for a few hundred more. The only problem is that one of the idlers requires that you remove the power steering pump which is a bit of a PITA.

I replaced all my pulleys and what not on my 60k..... Whats 200 bucks compared to thousands if it caused a motor to fail?

Ill gladly do more then whats needed to make sure my car is always 100%. Money never comes before reliability for me

Im in the same boat. I just ordered a full OEM kit from Ignition Ready. They are a new place based out of Long Island. They gave me a crazy good deal and helped me get the right parts because my evo has a 9 block and 8 head. Talk to Chris, he knows what hes doing!

Note to EVO owners don't bring your car to mistsu for timing job. I do my own work so no one "scared" me into anything.. I have done timing belt jobs on multiple makes and models over the years and for any tech to tell you that replacing timing belt tensioners is not needed is scary to say the least.

Make your own call but that tensioner goes and your zero clearance engine the service dept will love you then

I end up buying the whole kit for my IX which cost around $800 from Mitsu parts. I rather spend the money up front to make sure my engine is going to last me a while. Cheaper to do main then buy another engine. Parts are lot more expensive for IX then VIII.

Which dealership do you work at? Just so ill know to stay away from it.

I dont have 15 years of being a "mitsu master tech" or whatever, but ive been working on 4g63's for a pretty long while now. All it takes is just that one time for it to happen like you mentioned above. Id rather spend the $200 now then a new engine later. But to each his own. buddy.

As far as I know most larger dealerships have the concept of if it isn't completely broken or the customer isn't complaining about it, don't touch it/worry about it, can always recommend things based on opinion put the word seems to be used somewhat loosely as well.
Seems to be what I've gathered anyways.

The Mitsubishi books I found at the Mitsubishi service desk say otherwise. We also have PDFs from the EVO VIII and IX Shop manuals posted here and on Evoscan.com that say otherwise.

And i respect anybody's choice or opinion to buy anything they want for whatever reason they want, but for whatever reason it's hard for people to respect a different opinion other than their own,i sense a double standard here!

Yes sir,i have all of those, and in none of them i have found where it says that you have to replace every single pulley and tensioner on the engine, being a factory trained technician i have access to most of Mitsu's factory documents and i have never seen such documentation from Mitsubishi,i'm curious now,can you please send me the link or a pic of the page where this is at ? don't mean no disrespect i really want to see this, unlike other people i'm well aware i don't know it all and i'm ready to learn something new any time. Thanks in advance
