But Top Gear does also touch on what it's like to use the car on a day-to-day basis, which they did with the Evo on more than one occasion.

there is enough space in the rear of the GR hatch back. My son is over 5' 8" and he fits in the back (not behind me though since I'm 6' 4")

Everything that smurf said is true, i have a IX GSR and 2011 GRB hatch. Like everyone said here, the evo is much faster stock to stock and steering is more responsive. The STi on the other hand is also fun to drive on sport and sport # mode even if you just put a cobb ap stage 1 and simply an exhaust for the more pronounce boxer engine rumble. Aftermarket parts on the STi though are more expensive. But overall, I love both cars. My 2 y/o daughter has enough room on either cars.

+2.
I love both cars. They are just different. STi is kinda like a R35 to me. You buy it, put bolt ons on it, maybe nicer wheels and leave it the EFF alone.

before i liked evo's i liked the sti. i figured it was a better built car. i liked that the turbo spooled up faster. then a lot of guys on my website starting having issues with STOCK motors, some mildly modded. cracked ringlands, blown head gaskets ( A LOT of blown head gaskets), plastic timing gears shredding, spun bearings becuase you have to use an air oil seperator or some crazy ****. all that made the choice for me. honestly i like my evo more.

Well, I've been searching for over a month now for a decent IX, preferably.....

I basically decided against an STI. But, at this point I have no real options for an Evo. I'm not going to buy one that's been more than a little modded, and the car can't be light-years away unless it's really low miles I might get a PPI and ship it??? But, even that is questionable on any used car IMO.

I've considered a private sale, but.... To buy private party, I need to make two trips, since my credit union won't issue a check w/o a signed bill of sale. And I'm not going to sign on w/o looking at the car. And, what person in their sane mind would hand me over their car w/down payment and hopes that they get the bank check??? So this limits me to a reasonable driving distance to buy private....

So, maybe I should suck it up and buy a Subi? It's a compromise, but much better than a freaking overgrown American car/SUV my hubby keeps suggesting?!

I was in the same boat as you. I finally said screw it an got an evo X cause they seem to be a lot more readily available. Especially for what a lot of dealers seem to think 8s and 9s are worth, the X wasn't a bad decision IMO.

Its not what they think a 8 or 9 is worth....its what its worth because its considered a true[er] Evo compared to the X.

Evosforhotchicks you have consider that even a stock appearing Evo has been modded. Most owners put it back to stock so they can sell their parts and get max money (if you are trading a car in most dealerships "frown" on modifications and in some cases will give you less back because they will claim they need to put it back to stock.....and they never do). The dealerships typically don't do more then make sure everything is working nominally (lights turn, brakes are good, etc).

You take your brand new evo home and oh noes''''''''you need a new clutch.......or transfer case..........or transmission........or new motor (ok I know the last one is a bit extreme, but it has happened).

If it has some mods find out who did the mods, if there is a service history. Drive it. Is it hard to get in and out of gear, does it make a whining noise when cruising. When getting on it aggressively does it it sputter or hesitate.

I was willing to buy a monster Evo.....the original owner of my car ended up swapping a Evo IX SE owner motor for motor. I ended up with a stock Evo motor in my IX and the guy who bought the built motor ended up rebuilding it before he put it in his car since he saw scoring when he was putting his aftermarket cams in.

Bottom line. Its a crap shoot. Have some money on hand to deal with any of the possibilities i mentioned and it will make your Evo buying experience better (not being @$$ out on repairs for a car you just purchased.

The thing with the t-case is they will start chewing themselves up long before they make noise. I'd had suspicions for mine for a year before I did the clutch and confirmed it via the fluid. Didn't make any noise until 3 months later, and now, 3 months after that, it still doesn't always make noise.
