Yes to both. Take as much off as you can to give you as much room to work. The dust shield I forgot to mention has a hole where you can get those out. but my advice is take it off if you can.

This is the tools I use.

Try and see if you can get a shop to lend to you.

Oh, then just go to a shop. Use an air hammer with the fine point.

oh, damn. that sucks. the only thing i can think of is to drill a hole all the way thru the stud and try breaking the stud.. idk if that made sense to you..

try what i said earlier. drill into the center of the stud to weaken the stud and then try the air hammer? maybe it'll be easier.

Yeah I would just lay into it with a drill bit and hollow it out. There is only the taper left on the lug like u said so u won't have to drill much. A new stud is like 5 bucks and u can change it at the house when ur done. Honestly it shouldn't be that big of a deal at this point, just a little patience and time.

A skilled mechanic (way more skilled than I) would take a small chisel and rotate the remainder of the nut out of there.

I've witnessed mechanics working on big trucks removing and replacing fasteners and never using a wrench.
