"Rough" going to 3rd gear

I've been test driving evos and found on an 06 Mr w/60K stock w/ original clutch. The clutch seems ok seems a bit high engagement. Every gears shifted like butter except 3rd. It isn't grinding, but seems "rough". When I step down the clutch pedal and move the stick to 3rd, it seems something is still spinning and a bit rough to get in. To counter it, I kept my foot down on the clutch pedal a few secs longer than the other gears, and then it would shift fine...I think someone called it "granny shift". Again, there arent any grinding noise, just seems a little bit obstructed is the best way i can described as if i have to maneuver a little to get in gear. Fast shift is out of the question. The seller had the 60k done at the local mitsu dealers with proof receipts. So is this a common prob with the MRs? If I buy this, would changing the clutch help? Other then the 3rd gear, the car runs amazing.

I had a similar issue with my MR when I bought it. Was the syncro. Had to rebuild the trans so add that into the cost of the car. Thats what I would do and if you are gonna replace the clutch might as well have the tranny rebuilt.

I've had this problem before, did all the shifter based bushings, changed the clutch, new fluid. Doesn't happen as often anymore, still does, but only once n awhile, and at very high RPMs.....We'll see.

i got a similar issue with my 5 speed. all gears feel good, but going into 3rd feels a little rough. like the gear is worn or something. i tried royal purple tranny fluid, but it didn't help. i wanna try redline and see what that does.

Redline helps a little but what I found helped was front roll mount and solid underhood shifter bushings, redline cocktail helps with overall shift feel

I know this thread is a bit old but I thought I would weigh in anyway. I just had my trans pulled and my 5th gear synchro ring replaced on my 04 with 40k miles. I had them look at everything else and they said its all in order and mine still gets that rough feeling as well. I could have sworn I read somewhere that third gear for some reason doesn't lubricate as well as the others and some noise occurs when switching into 3rd. Once my trans is warm its less of a problem.

Same issue in both my Evo 8 and 91 3k VR4, Both were the 3rd gear syncro and they are about 70-90 for the ring, and a days labor to replace, might as well wait till you gotta do the clutch and bearing anyways since youll be right there.

More people seem to think its just a normal thing for an EVO. If his syncro's were bad they would actually be grinding and not allowing him to go into gear above a certain RPM. Mine does it and I know for certain my Syncro's are just fine.
