I actually saw the same trend when I was shopping for a small 2 seater convertible a while back. The main examples I was looking at (MR2 Spyder, Mazda Miata, Honda S2000) all had plenty of owners, some with mere months of ownership history. In that case, I think it's just people trying to live with a 2 seater convertible as their only car and realizing it doesn't work all that well.

Doesn't really explain the used Evo situation though. I suspect in many cases it is young people who realize they can't afford the insurance, car payments, and gas. In many others, it is probably over-zealous tunes causing the car to be a money pit. Either way, I stayed away from used Evos when I was looking and only bought new.

i have had my car going on about 9 months now and i have added Engine management, wide band, and some other mods. the only thing i can say is that i have found a TON of ceased bolts(breaking them every where) and just wear and tear that has been neglected. Other then that i am happy.

1) 2003
2) 109,000
3) just some minor neglect/ lack of proper maintenance.

1. 2005 Evo 8 MR
2. 27,000
3. None because I bought a stock Evo. Previous owner also had the free maintenance package from Mitsubishi so everything was done on schedule.

Thanks.
1) 2003
2) 110,000ish
3) Bad alternator which ultimately led to a bad mini battery, but everything else was good

Ive purchased two evos used a 2003 with 64k and an 05 with 79k. They have not had any serious problems but a couple little things here and there. If you can check the car out you should be alright. I wouldnt buy an evo new because I wouldnt buy a 10 but the newer you can find one the better off you will be Im sure.
