3rd grinding noise

Hi Guys,
My gear makes a grinding noise when i downshift to 3rd from on high rpms or if i shift quickly to 3rd high rpms. in normal drive there is no grinding or anything.

I've changed my gear oil to factory mitsubishi oil to see if this issue persists and unfortunately its still there.

Is this normal? or 3rd gear synchro is gone?

I doubt the synchro is done because you said nothing about it popping out of gear.

No poping or anyother issue apart from this grinding noise and that too comes only when I shift in higher rpms. What could be the issue?

Some single disc clutch suck at high rpm.

My trans grinds a tad when I quickshift into third. But if I'm driving normally, I can go into gear no problem. I had my transmission rebuilt 2 years ago, 4000 miles. I have a quartermaster twin (old design).

Sounds just like a bad synchro to me. More common on 5th (I had it). Your options are:

- Live with it (free and won't do ****)
- Try differenty tranny fluid and pray (cheap and worth a shot)
- Fix it (expensive but will fix it)

+1 on bad synchro. It's probably not completely gone but on it's way if 3rd is the only gear that grinds.

@JDM EVO 6
I'm not using single plate i have twin plate (excedy).

My 5th gear is very smooth and so are others apart from 3rd. Currently i'm using mitsu stock oil.

What do you recommend me to move to? redline? AMSOIL? motul? mobil1? please suggest! i will do another oil change to see if i can get rid of this problem

Mine is the same way, i have a Ix mr and if i shift normal into 3rd is perfect is i shift a little harder there is a grind. I think its my clutch (act) iv read a lot of ppl having lock out problems and such with them not sure but its weird kinda comes and goes. Just learned to deal with it.

It's not the clutch. It would operate the same between every gear. The fact that you're having a grind when under power in 3rd only points directly at the synchro.

My car did the same thing grinding at high rpms shifting into 3rd & 5th, but when I shift into 3rd below 4k rpm there was no grind. Got tranny rebuilt and everything was solved.

Like I said, it's cheap enough to try and pray but is very unlikely. If it shifts into gear fine while babying it but grinds when shifting under power, it's a bad synchro. The only fix is out comes the tranny and fix it.
