Very hard to cold start on E85
So early this summer I got tuned on E85 and when it got a little cold out (I live up in the mountains) around 55 degrees my car had a ton of trouble starting, so I went back to the tuner and he said he gave it a bit more fuel. From there on it had a little trouble starting (it never really got that cold again), but not quite as much.
Anywho, a cold front just went through colorado, and its about 30 degrees, out and my car almost refused to start (had to crank it over like 15 times). Keep in mind, thats only 30 degrees, I take this car up skiing, and it gets much colder up there. I'm at a loss for what to do. Any suggestions? And don't say get retuned on 91 unless thats seriously my only option.

Tune pretty much is your only option unless for some reason they don't change the fuel mixture every fall and spring there, which I'm sure they do. Get a re-tune on 93 and save both maps you can switch back and fourth with the fuel seasons
what oil are you using? I was tuned on e85 with 10w-30 and it would have a little bit of a rough start in the cold mornings. Switched to 5w-30 and now it starts like butter 1st or 2nd crank it fires no matter how cold it is. Im in northern NJ so we have cold lol. Also, it doesnt hurt to make sure you have a healthy battery under the hood (or trunk)

For the other question, I'm on FIC 850's
Thanks for the help. And yes I would love to do dual maps and love how you think we have 93 octane in colorado, but no we only have 91.

yeah, how I understand oils is that, as long as the higher weight number is the same the oil should work like that weight at temperature. So a 0 W 30 at temperature is just as thick as a 10 w 30, but at very low temps 0 w 30 helps a lot.
I'm on 10 w 30 right now, but switch over to 0w30 over the winter, haven't done that yet, so hopefully that helps.

Ethanol has issues with cold starting period. In countries which use mostly ethanol fuels, sometimes will get a separate OEM gasoline tank to aid in cold starting situations. Interesting no?
... a little FYI for ya.

With that i have a question. I have a and aggresive tune getting me 325whp on my evo 8 witb the basic boltons. I go between 91 and 93 octane cuz not all gas stations actually very few have 93 and when they do 99% of them have ethanol in it. Should i never fill wth 91? Also i have a setup coming that ill be tuned to almost 500whp. Can i fill with 91 than either or should i always go with 93the with 10% ethenol?
To the OP. Cranking IPW (To start E85 on first crank in cold weather in any conditions. This is one of the options i pulled from tscomptuned's website. I'd check with tom at tscomptund and ask about getting a tune.

If you were tuned aggressively on 93 and you put 91 in it you WILL knock or have detonation if you push it. How much damage you do depends on the tune and what knock count your ecu is pulling timing at. IMO
