Why not take it to an exhaust shop and weld 2 long resonators before the muffler at the back? That should help quiet it down a bit.

Yap this will help alot for sure, so you don't have drop money on a new exhaust.

Take a look at this, I came across it the other day but the one car they test has 2 resonators and a muffler, and was made to be as stock as possible. It's at 0:56 seconds.

I recently ordered and installed an RRE Stealth on my Evo VIII. I'm not sure if it's stock quiet but I know that it's not obnoxious like my previous exhaust. At cruising speed on the freeway all I hear is road noise. When accelerating I mostly hear mechanical engine noises and turbo spool (stock intake with a cone filter hiding in the stock airbox). There are two instances when I can hear a lot of noise from the exhaust is at WOT above 5k RPM (but it's not intrusive or booming) and at idle due to loping idle from Blox 272 cams. Bonus points are that it's flat black with a 3" tip. Smaller than the stock tip, it looks stocker than stock.

Read on for some more opinions of mine which no one may care to read but hopefully can come in handy for someone somewhere. Here's a list of my exhausts ranked from loudest to quietest:

ETS 3" w/ Aero Turbine muffler = loudest and downright obnoxious, angry pissed off sound, beautiful quality/workmanship though
Works catback w/ muffler delete pipe = Pretty loud, sounded cool, crappy quality
Megan Racing = loud outside, not as loud inside, sounded really good, great exhaust, would get another if I wanted a loud exhaust again
Works catback w/ muffler = sounded like crap, looked like crap, crappy quality
RRE Stealth = very quiet inside the cabin, I can listen to the radio at lower volume (volume level on stock radio at 14 as compared to above 20 with ETS catback) and have a decent conversation without yelling over the sound, haven't heard it from the outside yet so can't comment on that, great quality/workmanship, I really like the stealthy look but most may think it looks ugly or boring
OEM = Sorry I don't even remember. That was the first thing I swapped out within weeks of buying the car 5 years ago.

You are in Queens. They are just love to pull you over for anything. If i'm in NY again, i will put stock exhaust & SP cut out and call it a day.

Yea the cops don't play in ny, that was my plans originally but I herd alot of bad things about the electronic cut out. The flaps get bend after 2step etc.

If you can afford the Varex muffler, I do recommend it. It's quieter than stock with the valve closed but the car has almost no power unless the it's open at least a little. I painted mine flat black as I hate drawing any attention if possible.

Quiet and power are not simultaneously obtainable.
I researched this a lot over a year ago. If you want quiet stick with the stock exhaust.
If you want power get a Buschur I think it is probably the least obnoxious of the power making aftermarket exhausts. It is pretty loud over 5k RPM' s.
