Post a picture of the tester please. I have a tester that I use and its really quite simple. I'd venture a guess that the bottom quarter is filled with water then the rest is filled with the fuel right up the then neck.
with your tester are you putting in more water then the e85? the first line on my tube if 60% of what the tube holds

its empty now but when i did the test and i let it sit for 15mins after shaking it really good the ethanol level was at 55%, could it be that low from the gas station?
adding 60% water to the first line seem like a lot and maybe that is why im getting a low reading?

Hmmm...Im not familiar with that specific one but it seems like others on here have used it so hopefully they can give you a better answer. That bottom line is quite high up but its a different tester.
This is the one that I have used for over a year now and it works perfect.

It appears to be smaller than the one that you have so it cant get as granular in theory. Nonetheless, its quite accurate and has proved its value displaying when the fuel is 85% vs 70% I test the fuel every time I fill up, and strictly use 85%. It takes me an extra couple of minutes but the piece of mind is well worth the time. I recommend this to anyone who runs their car on ethanol.

Where was the station? One time, while visiting my girlfriend in Long Island the fuel I tested came out to about 50% as well. Luckily for me I hadnt put it in my car yet and went to a different station.
I bet the gas was actually that bad and its not the tester. I'm not surprised they wouldn't take it back for obvious reasons. btw it is illegal to sell the gas they sold you so maybe that can give you a little leverage with them

just bought $30 worth
