Whirring sound at low gears.

I drive an Evo VIII with the SSL package. Only have an AEM shortram intake and a Forge BOV on the car. When I drive the car at low-mid rpms on first to third gear I gear a whirring sound coming out of my car. I've asked many people about this and I get answers ranging from "it's completely normal" to "your tranny is going out". I was wondering if I could get some more thoughts from other evo owners.

In first gear, some whining while accelerating is normal. I think it has to do with the gear in the tranny.
