Importing to quebec
Importing to quebec
Hello guys! I'm new around! I have been looking this website awhile before posting (mainly the sale section) because I'm willing to buy a lancer evolution. In quebec, these cars cost few more thousands than in States, so I would love to import one here this spring. I would like to know if its possible, how much it cost and does anyone have ever did it?
Sorry for my bad english, I'm french.. :/

Brought an Evo IX into BC.
Carfax is your friend. Visual inspection if the VIN sticker on all panels is still on there provides some insurance that the car hasn't been hit.
You need a certification from Mitsubishi that the vehicle is free of recalls and submit that before importing the car. You can search the VIN # on the
website - the printout from the US
website was acceptable in my case.
Get a temporary permit from your insurance broker in order to drive it. Theoretically you need one in every state you drive across as well. In my case the seller allowed me to use his plates for that and I returned them by mail. These are only valid in the US. Once in CDN you need CDN insurance.
You need to do an export declaration/permit at the US border before bringing the car across the US border. Do not forget this as this might potentially make the car subject to seizure by the US authorities.
You pay import duties and taxes at the CDN border.
Then the car needs to be inspected. In BC it needs both a federal and a provincial inspection.
I needed to retrofit daytime running lights and child seat anchors in the rear (3x). Also they stuck some km/h stickers on the speedo to make it compliant - have since put it in metric Euro speedo cluster 270kmh.
There is a disposal fee for bringing in tires (BC only I believe).
I originally jury rigged my daytime running lights as described on the board. My inspection station did not like that fogs could be turned on in all light positions and I ended up putting a daytime relay in.
The car needs to have a catalyst to pass inspection. Mine didn't have it and I failed and retrofitted the factory cat that came with the car. Since then I fitted a 100 cell cat, as the factory piece created surge issues with the existing tune.
All stuff, both intention to import and export needs to be declared by email prior to bringing the car in. Need VIN# for that. Then on the day you bring it in, you need to physically show up on the US border before entering Canada and only then proceed to the to CDN.
Quebec inspection should be fairly similar to BC - might have some different emphases.
