Knocking sound in front when driving straight.

Hey, My Evo 6 has been making quite loud knocking sounds from the front when driving slow, I've read a fair few forums about cv joints or drop links being the potential problem, I managed to remove my front wheels and had a look at the sway drop links and couldn't find any movement. I then had a look at the CV joint boots and they seemed fine. Doesnt seem to make any clicking sound when turning.
When i grabbed the axle it moves in and out (towards the engine and wheel) no side ways movement about 5 or so ml and seems to make a similar knocking sound.

What I'm wanting to know;

Should there be any movement in the half shaft?
If it is the CV is it possible to just clean and repack with grease replace clips, etc? (After inspecting for and damage)
What other possiblities could it be?

Thanks.
