Alternator Bolt not going through

Hey guys

I'm having a strange problem while trying to install a relacement alternator on my EVO. The through bolt that goes through the alternator and mounting bracket won't go through all the way. I can see the holes are lined up and the bolt goes in half way but not completely. Anybody have any advice? Thanks guys

Fred

Have you tried taping it on it with hammer to see if you can slide it the rest of the way in before it gets to the threads?

Yeah I Gave it a few Taps. Haven't wailed on it yet, though. I loosely secured it to the intake Mani bracket up top just so I didn't have to hold the damn thing while aligning the bottom bolt. This sucks! Should be easy

I would think if the bolt came out clean, that it should go back in ok.

If the bolt came out, it should go back in.

Put a bit of grease on the bolt, and tap it in with a hammer. If it's not going in at all, then it isn't lined up, or has stress on it somewhere. Just wiggle the alternator up and down while you're tapping the bolt through.

With a hammer, it shouldn't take much force at all...

Yeah I would just wiggle the alternator back and forth with one hand and try guiding the bolt in with the other, done too much damage with hammers before

Sometimes on stubborn bolts I don't want to use a hammer on I'll use a C clamp and put some pressure on it. Then I'll wiggle the part back and forth until it seats all the way.

This is the style C clamp I use. Good luck!

How did you replace this? From under the car or did you remove the manifold?

what he said. it probably isn't aligned properly, i've done a few of these and they always go in easy for me.

Like Propilot was saying, the alternator is likely just not centered so the bolt doesn't slide through easily. Ive had this happen numerous times. Don't pound on it with a hammer. It should go in with just your hands, if not wiggle the alternator. If its not perfectly straight the bolt wont slide through.
