So Is a slight 2nd Gear Grind common on the 8/9? Maybe not a full grind but a slight "different " feeling when going into 2nd gear.
And our transmissions' are known to be "notchy", but not for grinding in any particular gear, unless you exceed the torque threshold of the transmission (ie depends if you have a 5 speed or 6, as they're different)
Answer my questions posted above and I can help you out a little better. Also list your power output and type of clutch.

From what i have read nd heard 5th is the notorious gear for grinding when trying to slam it into gear. The synccros in our trans are crap. If u slowly go into 5th mine wont grind only when i shift a little too fast.

Mine only grinds when going into 2nd at low rpms. I aways figured it was my car calling me a vag. It doesn't bug me too much yet. I got my TC rebuilt and that took two months. Don't feel like going through that process again at the moment.
Mine always wants to grind going into 3rd unless I put a little 'Wrist English' into it. Adjustments are within specs, fluid is stock and swapped per service intervals. I'm thinking the synchros are a either a bit worn or just funky. Has been like that since I brought her home with 7k on the ticker, 44k now, no change. Won't worry about it till something actually breaks.
I've had two Evo IXs with five-speeds, both of which were purchased new but grinded in either second or third (I can't remember which one) for the first few thousand miles. Like someone else said, fifth grinds once in a while if you're really accelerating hard and shift into fifth quickly, but it's nothing to get too worried about. It rarely ever happens now.
