I own a 9MR, 6 speed can handle power if not abused. I made 453wtq on a mustang dyno with the 6 speed. Drove it hard except never launched it. Had that for 35,000 miles like that. Then I swapped in a built evo8 5 speed with QM 8 leg twin. highway cruising the rpm difference isnt much. maybe 200-300rpms at most. Also the mph at redline between 1st-3rd was about the same. 5 speed is deff better for drag racing. 4th gear is long

i'm sure it's been said that "less shifting, more pulling" means it's taking you forever to accelerate. shorter gears = better acceleration.
also, most of us like a better selection of gears for any given turn.

Theoretically that would be the case, but it doesn't always happen that way in the real world, where the difference between them is fairly small when it comes to mpg. But at the end of the day, I figure there's a reason why the five-speed got the 19/25 rating while the six-speed got the 18/24 rating... so in the EPA's standardized tests, the five-speed did a hair better. Who knows why, as the only obvious downside of the six-speed is that the MR is overall a tad heavier, though not by a lot (definitely less than 100 pounds, maybe closer to 50).

more parasitic loss, i would imagine? in addition to the weight. it doesn't take much to drop 1mpg, so i could believe it.

i'd like to never have to drive my Evo on the freeway and gear a 5spd accordingly

Ironically I got the best mpg I have ever gotten. Managed 31.89 mpg driving up to visit my parents. But before leaving, I had my tires rotated and balanced, and the service tech said that one was pretty off balance.

I beat my previous best of 30.39, and that was back in 2010. It's great but in the back of my mind... I'm pissed that I didn't get 32 mpg. I shouldn't have downshifted on the freeway onramp haha. I bet that could've gotten me that extra 0.11 mpg.

And just in case you're curious...

crazy. i did a steady 70mph without passing traffic, etc from Fresno to Buttonwillow. only got 23. i'd kill for anything near 30.

i just saw your gas prices. wow. i'm paying $4.09/gal for our "special" CA gas. i'm sure it hurts mpg. man.. your prices and your mpg.. i wouldn't need a daily driver to get to work anymore LOL

I'm in CA too. But a lot of my recent fill-ups have been at Sam's Club, so that explains the difference in price.

5 Speed better suited for Drag racing, but from a roll a 6 speed is optimal. I'll take the 6 speed every time.

They have a phone app (Gas Buddy), and it updates on both the app and the site simultaneously, regardless of where you enter it.

All this goes out the window of course with 600+ WHP as your ratio's on both systems becomes way too short. The next mod would have to be a taller final drive ratio. Then you can remain in gear longer across the board.
