You can't ebrake turn in the subaru either because of the same rear engagement problem....in recent years the only cars able to do this have been the JDM + European evo 7 and 8 with active center diff ... like Chronohunter said you will have to adopt the "Scandanavian Flick" to rotate US evo ..my 2c

Not like the JDM models when the handbrake is used you can lock up the rear wheels beacuse of the active center diff. which senses electronically , but since of center diffs here are mechanical.
You'll need to apply left foot brake technique or like Limey said scandinavian flick...where before you enter a corner you want to upset the balance of the car for the rear and to come out. i.e approaching a tight right hand corner under heavy braking
flick it to the left while brakes are applied then right before you toss it in to the right hand corner let go of the brakes...the you will start to feel the car oversteer.

even on tried it in my Galant VR4 and same thing the came feels like it is being stopped...but on my friends WRX pull the hanbrake and you can make the back end slide even on dry pavement. just my 2 cents

Mate, next time just hit the clutch and then pull the handbrake (as we call it over here) then your Evo will go into a nice drift. If you are really good then you can apple some power and hey presto, you will have a power slide. Just what the car was built for! Hehe.

Still destroy your center-diff if you disengage the clutch?

yes....because whether you are applying power to the driveline or not, pulling the e-brake forces the rear tires to spin at different speeds than the fronts.

man people don't understand the concept of lsd and mechanical differentials... let me try and rephrase things...

Locked/semi-locked until unlocked by other means.....

Actually, Subarus with DCCD will disengage the center diff when the hand brake is pulled. The DCCD senses the brake light triggered by the hand brake and will open up.

Yep.. this sounds suspect...I would think FHI would use something a bit more sophisticated than a e-brake warning light to disengage the center diff...If you take that notion to the extreme you could be stranded by the roadside because your cigarette box is lodged under the e-brake handle...I could be wrong though

Yes, he's right. Just read about DCCD on nasioc for example. It's an active center diff that disengages when the e-brake is pulled.
You can go try it on your STi, I would if I had one

Sorry to reply so late, I don't really check here that often. Anyway, here is a shot from the service manual about the DCCD.

*EDIT* Fixed image
