Engine Belt Whine Type Noise Help
Took the serpentine belt off and the really annoying whining noise is now gone when I rev the motor. It use to be worst at 3k RPM. I will replace the serpentine belt (due for change since 11 years old and cracks) and the tensioner pulley since it had alot of side to side play. All the other pulleys did not have much play or make noise. Will let you know how the new parts go. I was going to order the Gates tensioner pulley (Part # 36238) as referenced from Rock Auto for my 2004 Evo. Ordering the Goodyear belt 4060705 Poly-V Belt. I hope the pulley is the correct one but everyone is saying to reference RockAuto.
Yes changing the serpentine belt did help quiet the noise down. I feel the Evo 4G63 has an intrinsic belt whiney noise to it with the serpentine (accessory) belt.
I replaced it with the Goodyear belt, since these newer belts are designed to be quiet or less noisey. I also replaced the tensioner pulley for the accessory belt since it was little unsmooth when I was spinning it to test.
Take off the accessory belt and turn all the pulleys to see if you feel anything binding, play or hear any noises. Then replace the ones that aren't good. I only replaced the tensioner since I read it made noise normally.
I don't remember what specific brand I bought for the tensioner pulley but you don't need to buy the whole assembly just busy the pulley and exchange. These 2 changes pulley + belt made the difference for me.

I had the same noise once. The bolt from my balance shaft, driven of the oil pump, backed out so the gears weren't meshing properly. By the time I figured it out. the bolt had knocked around enough to get metal into the engine. Poof. Freshly-built engine gone by bye bye.
If you have a stethoscope, try to get it down by the oil pump sprocket and see if it's coming from that area.
Hopefully not, but it's one more thing to rule out.

Bump to an old thread again, but I have the same whine in my car. It happened right after the all the belts and pulleys were replaced. Brought it to a shop and they said "it was the auto tensioner and it needed to adjust the belt over time, will go away within 100 miles" it's been 7k miles and I still have the whine. So could it be possible something was faulty?
Wow my old old thread. No longer have the evo anymore, but easiest way to know if it is the accessory belt and/or pulleys' causing the noise is to take the serpentine belt off and run the motor temporarily. If there is no more whine with revving in the car, there is your answer. Check all the pulleys by spinning them for any noise. They should be smooth as butter and make no noise.
Goodyear belt 4060705 Poly-V Belt may be better if they didn't use this. It was ultra quiet
