Looking to install HKS 272 Cams

Recently purchased my Evo from her original owner. He bought HKS 272 cams (packaged with springs), but never installed them. He told me when he went to his mechanic to hve them installed, there was a part he was missing. He couldn't remember the part name when I purchased the car, but I definitely want to put in the cams ASAP! I'm assuming he's talking about the HKS Cam gear? I'd love some feedback! Thanks guys!

I would sell those HKS cams and pick up a set of GSC S2's instead, you'll be a lot happier.

The part you are probably missing are retainers for the springs. The cams will work fine with the OEM cam gears. There are some good youtube videos on the job actually.

+1 for the GSC cams. They have good feedback on performance. I had the HKS 264 for both exhaust/intake and ended up with with the GSC 272.

I wanted to purchase a set for my STI and it looks like it will a B!tch to install

I'll definitely look into the Cosworths as well. Anyone else for the +2 on Cosworths over HKS?

Final Thoughts:
After the +3 on the GSC S2's, I decided to do a bit more digging for myself. I've been under HKS' spell for quite some time haha. I'm actually pretty surprised with the power differences that I'm seeing with the S2's over the 272's. I think I'm convinced! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys. Time to start sellin'

Depends what your goals are for the car. HKS cams are good. A lot of folks don't like them on here because they don't give you the peak hp numbers. The AMS cam test showed the HKS cams outperformed these other cams on the lower to mid end of the rpm range. Not everything is just about peak numbers, especially if its a daily driven car. Torque is fun. I think the hks cams will give you more of that vs S2s.

Fwiw, there are a few other great cams out there. Im running Tomei cams and Ive been really happy with them. Recently dynoed on stock 9 turbo 340hp/ 350 ft lbs of torque at 25 psi , on a dyno dynamics dyno, with the help of these cams, along with some other bolt ons.

As far as a daily driver cam, the Kelford 272 performed extremely well in the 4500-7500rpm range. I went through and calculated differences and it is one of the ones that was hard to beat.

This...^^^. The HKS are a great cam, why spend the money on new cams when you already have something that will work just fine and is as proven as others mentioned here. In case you didn't realize it--you wont get much if you try and sell them due to opinions mentioned-- so why bother. You would have to dig to find the old info, but you can run the hks with stock springs and retainers just fine--they drop in.

HKS 272 on my stroker (almost 2.4L) are lovely. They idle like stock and spool an old GT35R turbine wicked on the down low. I do leave a bunch of power on top range RPM, but I don't spin the engine up that high anyway.

Depends on what your goals are… are you going to drag strip, circuit track racing?

S2s is probably one of the best cams available for the EVO

but what people are forgetting is that the HKS 272 generally delivers more power from 2,500 - 3,500 & 4,500 than the GSC S2.

after 4,500 onwards is where the GSC S2 shines.

the OEM cams has been dyno proven to deliver more power at 4,500rpm than the following;
  • Kelford 264
  • Tomei 270
  • Burchur 272
  • Jun 272
  • Tomei 280
  • GSC R2
  • Kelford 280
  • GSC S3
    &
  • Tomei 290

The large lobed cams compromise low RPM than milder cams but generate big power up top at high rpms and sometimes raises the redline.

which can be a nuisance if you use it on the circuit track where you require quick exceleration out of corners.

anyways, good luck
