Post Ac clutch replacement? Or is entire compressor needed?

Well I diagnosed that the AC clutch on my compressor has to be lightly tapped to engage it, but even after engagement it will still slip. You can see it trying of course. I can feel the magnetism when the A button is pressed on so I am sure the clutch is just worn out sadly.

I was wondering if the clutch components can be replaced, or if a new compressor must be used. I like that I have zero leaks in my system and would love to keep the refrigerant in the system and not have to recover it and refill. If anyone has information or tips to this I would greatly appreciate it.

Hope you all have a great day.

Honestly, you are going to save time and money just replacing the whole compressor with a used one.. I am sure you can get one for cheap on the classifieds. In order to service it you need
A mess of special tools and parts to set it up correctly. I know it is a pain to recover and recharge but its way more of a pain to replace the clutch in it.

I would do it that way and then check the oil and inspect the orifice tube.

I doubt you would have to replace your whole compressor. The clutch components can be replaced without needing to drain your refrigerant. While researching my own A/C related problems, I've come across alot of different people with the same symptoms as you. It seems to be a fairly common problem. From what I can remember, others have fixed it by adjusting the airgap. Mitsubishi sells a service kit with different shims to adjust it. This was a very helpful thread for me: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ng-advice.html

I recently had A/C problems and ended up replacing my compressor clutch. OEMMitsubishiparts sells the compressor clutch for $66.97. Replacing it was pretty straightforward, taking me about 1.5 hours without any special tools (although I would recommend a puller).

Hope this helps,
Kyle

Exactly what you have there. A friend dropped his compressor off for me. Procedure which I couldn't find but figure out is this: Remove 14mm nut, first parts comes off, remove snap rings, and remove 2nd snap rings, its all apart. I am going to use his and see if it fixes it, if not Ill buy a new AC clutch assembly. Would you happen to have the part # available?

Yep, sound about right.

A/C service kit is: MR315936
A/C coil (clutch) is: MR568462

Are you sure there isnt high resistance in the circuit causing the magnet to be weaker? I'd hate to replace all that when a wire may be faulty.

I put the used unit on just the magnet and coil, I used a shim it came with, it works now, but you can hear it engage, I remove shim, everything is perfect.

Anyone ever have to not use a shim? everything seems to be good now, I will most likely one day replace the two components anyhow.

I actually just this past weekend removed the shim to get my air gap back to spec and get my ac working again, I remember reading of a couple others that also had to remove their shim completely

^^same here, I removed shim completely and got my AC clutch work again. Its second season since removed and no problems so far. Its like 20mins of work. Its worth to try before throwing money at it. Good luck.
