My starter went out and I wanted to get it fixed today, so instead of ordering a factory replacement, I went to Autozone. I ordered a 2005 mitsubishi lancer evolution 2.0 DOHC starter from what it said on the screen. I went to put it in and it doesn't fit. The starter is an O shape, but the transmission has a D shape. The autozone starter won't fit unless you drill out one of the bolt holes on the starter and grind your gasket down, but I'm not going to hack up my car or the starter. I ended up ordering an OEM replacement from STM.
The tap and die set from autozone sucks too. I miss New Jersey, evo parts were only a 20min drive away.
Has anyone with an 05 replaced their starter with an autozone one? If so how did it work out for you?
DO NOT drill out anything, you have the wrong starter.. Take that hunk of crap back, go to the dealership and get one there. 3rd party starters are usually crap and waste more time than they're worth.
lol y'all suck. Got a reman from O'Reilly's 2 weeks ago that with core return and my military discount was $80. I had it back in the car in under 30 minutes and have been crank city ever since.
Wrong part probably ordered or one more sub-menu option that wasn't clicked that led to wrong one being ordered. I will say, the guy at O'Reilly's wasn't paying attention and ordered me an alternator instead of a starter so I was a little tiffed at that when I went back a day later and it was the wrong part completely. But he re-ordered an alternator and that was spot-on once it came in.
I got an autozone one as well the only thing different was the heat shield didnt line up correctly with the original holes, and i've never had a gasket for any of my starters
I'm here to clear up some of the confusion in this thread, provide some useful information, and prove the OP is over reacting over the wrong part. I also want people to feel more confident in buying some of these OE equivalent parts for the evo. As one of the biggest OEM fan boys out there I know it feels good to have a true factory part, however, I don't think it's fair that parts like starters, alternators, batteries, and accessory belts need to stay OEM. Spend money where you should and save where you can. I.E. Stick with the oem oil pump front cover because you can't afford to experiment in that area.
I just installed an Autozone re-manufactured starter (part # 19405) and it bolted up to the transmission perfectly. It has a 1 star review on their website from some donkey who claims that it is defective and of low quality. I needed to see for myself. It comes with a limited lifetime warranty and the factory shield DOES fit. The two studs on the back of the starter motor that pass through two of the four holes on the heat shield don't have the same thread pitch as the tiny 8mm nuts that come off the factory starter, but the holes for the 8mm bolts do have the proper thread pitch. I also bent the metal spade connector upwards towards the ignition wire for more clearance from my larger downpipe. This step is optional. It has only been a few days, but if this Duralast starter ever fails, I will report back here to talk ****. I don't think i'll be back.
