Possible New Evo 5 owner
Possible New Evo 5 owner
Howdy folks,
As part as the obligatory research, i'm reaching out to EvoM for information. I know we have our guru's on here, much like any other boards.
I don't know, or even have any friends that own a Mitsubishi. I'm heavily into the Subaru community, but i'm actually selling my STI as i'm looking for something different for a change.
I've had the golden opportunity at first grabs of an Evo 5, but sadly, i know nothing about the brand, or it's model!
This is, of course a RHD. Insurance conversation's aside, i'd appreciate if we can keep this strictly about the mechanical/expense side.
Are parts generally expensive to replace or fix on Evo's? Or Lancer's for that matter? I know with Subaru's alot of parts are universal from a 2002 WRX/STI, to a 2007 WRX/STI. Does the same apply for Evo's?
Are parts easy to get?
Are parts easy to replace/fix?
Thanks a bunch for the information guys! I hope i don't get flack for not doing research elsewhere.

An Evo V is a solid choice. I know quite a few people with them, and they seem to enjoy them. Maintenance and mechanicals are more akin to the later Evos as far as I know; the engine is in the same orientation as later models (Evo 6-9) with decent parts-exchangeability. I think that the ECUs are more compatible amongst later models, too. Expenses are going to be higher than Subarus due to the fact solely that pre-8 Evos were never sold in N. America. The power potential is more easily accessible in these cars than in Subarus though, and most spare parts are either readily accessible or readily upgradeable. The expensive parts which are hard-to-find are going to be body panels, trim pieces etc, so do your best to get one that hasn't been treated badly in that department.
PS, I know you didn't want to mention insurance, but try Federated in Mississauga. I have a great rate through them with a clean record and the Evo as my primary car. Just tryin' to help

When you say expenses will be higher, what exactly do you mean? Since you mention that there are readily available mechanical parts here, excluding the trim.
And I'll give them a shout as well! I have a clean record too, so that should help out!
EDIT: I'm assuming it's also 94 that goes in this *****?

I should have been more specific; most of the "available" parts are engine-related. The body work and suspension, brakes, transmission, etc. are much more specific to my knowledge and so replacing them is more difficult/expensive usually (it's important to get involved in the Evo community for this reason; all of these other great people on this forum are wonderful resources for both advice and also sourcing parts :P). Mine is a II, and I think things got a bit better with the 5-9 Evos, but still it is important to keep in mind that getting a replacement for a worn out gearbox is a lot harder than doing the same for e.g. a Subie.
Oh, and whatever the highest grade of gas you can find is best
Here in Ontario, we only have 91 octane cat pee, so I tend to throw in an octane booster with each tank.
