IX Rear Diff Question

How many bearings are in the rear diff of our cars and what are the part numbers? I am in the process of rebuilding mine with the Weir 12 plate but i figured since im in there i can refreshen things up.

What else should i do with the rear diff while it's out of the car.

Do you have the tools to setup a diff? I assume you know you cant just pull the bearings and then re-install knew ones without checking and resetting tolerances and reshimming. I would be a little concerned with the pinion bearing due to the low fluid levels of the stock diff cover running that bearing a little low on fluid from the factory...other then that you should be good to go.

I seriously didn't know that... i assumed you can just remove them and replace with a new one.... i read about the pinion bearing and i have a feeling mine may be going out as i hear a grinding noise coming from my rear diff on deceleration and a whining noise on acceleration in the highway.

My mechanic also confirms it's coming from the rear diff although when i changed the fluids today there was no metal in the magnet drain plug nor any metal fragments in the fluid.

Diff plates are easy. I rebuilt mine 2 times a season for 4 years. I wouldn't do the bearings until it is needed. You will need a press and specialty tools. Plus you will need to re-shim the diff. If you only rebuild the plates you don't have to reshim the diff.

Upgraded to the Wier Max Grip LSD and changed out all the bearings. She is as good as new now.

To be honest... I didnt see anything wrong with the plates or bearings. I replaced them all however and the noise went away. Using Redline fluids this time vs. the stock diaqueen.
