Front diff & Tranny share same fluid

I had my tranny, front diff and rear diff fluid changed to red line today. I was planning to put MT-90 for tranny and 75w90 for front/rear diffs. However, the mechanic told me that there's a hole in between the front diff and the tranny, and they actually share fluid.

I still went ahead with the MT-90 for the tranny and 75w90 for the front diff, although they will be mix up after a drive.

I guess this is the difference between the USDM and JDM.

Can anyone assure me what I did was right?

Hi Raywong, I have also heard this about the jdm driveline from posts on the Mitsubishi lancer register in the UK.

Thanks Jemm, I didn't find any conclusion in that thread, but at least I confirmed that the oil actually flows between the front diff and the tranny.

Hmm...I wouldn't think so....refer to my thread about my dealer mixing my 2 oils...https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...threadid=47335

I talked to a Redline tech and he told me that it was not good to mix the different oils because of their "GL" rating. MT-90 is GL4 and 75W-90 is GL5

I will ask my mechanic, I remember on my last clutch change in the E6 the transfer fluid was not changed, only the gearbox fluid.

Could this be an urban legend of sorts held over from the DSM days when the transfer used to be inside the gearbox?

Please read my post again: My Evo 7 is a JDM model with ACD/AYC, so it might be different from yours.

Shifting gear is a lot quicker after replacing the HKS with MT-90 GL-4. It felt like the syncros are working faster now.

Just hope the MT-90 GL-4 is not hurting the front diff.

raywong, does your owners manual specify different GL ratings for the tranny and transfer case? If it specifys different weight oil for each, then they can not have a passage between them. I was told by a Mitsu mechanic here in the states that the DSM tranny and transfer case share oil. This was false information, and it may be you are also getting false information from a mechanic.

There is a whole between the Transfer case and teh Trans, but its only a over flow for the transfer case. if your levels are good they should not mix. FYI... We only use Mobile 1 75w-90 Gear Oil in all of our cars. Redline is good sometimes but I have seen it destroy gear boxes before aswell. You can't go wrong with Mobile 1.

The spider gear portion of the transfer case does share fluid with the trans. The ring and pinion portion is seperated with seals.

I have an Evo VII RS2 (with ACD/AYC). The other day, I sent Mobil One an e-mail inquiring whether it was ok to use their fully synthetic (GL5) gear oil in my tranny.

They replied immediately stating that their oil should NOT be used in my tranny. PM me if you want to see a copy of their e-mail.

I changed to Redline around 10 days ago, the first 2-3 day I did feel some improvement in 3rd, but 2nd was still rough. But the improvement continued, now all gears are smooth 90% of the time.
