Buying a evo 1

Hi everyone I am new to this forum and I am going to buy a evo, I am interested in the older models (1 thru to 5), I am currently looking at a evo 1 for sale, is there anything I need to know about them, I am having trouble deciding between the evo 1 and 4, if I need a new engine in the evo 1, will a newer 4g63 drop straight in? This is the evo 1 I am looking at.

the evo 4-9 engines are mounted on opposite side of engine compartment. they dont interchange with early engines. I have driven all ten years of evos and prefer the early version. it drives light and nimble. the cars got progressively heavier with each year and the engine stayed 2.0. weight is your enemy in a performance car. but that is just my opinion. they are all great cars to play with.

I think evos 1 to 3 are all RHDs and did not have any LHD versions.

How are the evo 1 to 3's engines compared to the later motors? How are their transmissions?

The engine in the 1 and 2 are more reliable than the 4 - the 5 is quite good too. The 3 had weak ring lands and the 4 had oiling/cooling issues.

Transmissions are good if you don't abuse them in the 1-3. The 5th gear has a common weak syncro problem, but everything else should be reliable at lower power levels.

Nothing major interchanges or bolts in from 3 to 4, as mentioned the orientation was flipped. The head is backwards but valve train stuff still works (other than cams), and the reciprocating assemblies are the same.

I can't remember but wasn't there also core shift in the 1-4 models?

I've never heard of it in the 1-3.

There's a lot of commonality with the mechanical components of the early Evos (1-3) and DSMs of the same time, plus there was also the Mirage/Summit that shared parts as well.
