Buying Evo 8 Engine

Found an amazing deal on a "new" 03-04 evo 8 engine.

Long story short, got to talking to a random guy driving a mazda3 at a gas station about cars, and turn out he used to own a dsm. He had a project before he was deployed on swapping an evo 8 engine that he claimed he bought "brand new", but ended up giving up on it for personal reason. Ask him if he was interested in selling it, he said yes!!

Fast forward 30 mins later after following him to his house, and there it was sitting on a pallet. Evo 8 engine complete minus tranny. Wiring harness, 8 turbo, ecu, manifolds etc.. everything there and engine looked very clean and new like he claimed. Tag from place he had purchase from still ziptied on.

We came to an AMAZING DEAL!!!

My question is, other then it visually checking out, are there any other precaution i can do to make sure this is a legit engine with no surprises after first initial startup. Never bought an engine before.

Outside of hearing it run there isn't a lot you can check. See if the exhaust ports are clean. If it has not been run there should be no residue there. Check and see if there is oil in it and if it's clean. Last of all maybe receipts? Other than that I can't think of a lot else.

can you check the motor vin number to see if it is stolen, the last thing you want is when you have to install it and register the motor number to find out its stolen, can you hand crank it?

You mean manually cranking it? No i havent yet.

And as far as the vin goes, i did a search and apparently there are no actual vin stamping on the engine, although there are stamping on the tranny which is not included so that does us no good.
I've read the only way to track an engine vin are the serial number under the stamping 4G63 on the timing side of the block.

Correct me if im wrong.

Pull the valve cover off. If it's a new engine the head should be clean inside.

Also, make sure the motor cranks over by hand

Engine checks out. No signs that oil has ever been in car. This observation was done buy looking through oil cap, but will be pulling valve cover off in the evening for a better look. Dip stick was flawless as well. Will pull manifold off to look in port as well.

Note: for the price I paid, I wouldn't be bummed out at all if I found evidence of a "used engine".

If I got a engine like that I'd call up some engine shops to see if I could take it over to get it test run, like on that show on TV where they pull down big blocks and dyno them in a test bed.

New engine

I just bought a new motor for my EVO 8 as well. That bad boy set me back 5 stacks, and I thought I got a good deal!
All I need to find now is a body kit to convert it to the EVO 7!

What did your engine consist of? Out of curiosity, where can u purchase a new evo 8 engine from nowadays.

I paid $1500 for mines. I thought I got a really swell deal being it's brand new complete swap. Minus tranny

You got a hell of a deal my friend! For $1,500 I would buy it and keep it in my garage as a spare!

Mine came with:
Supertech beehive springs
Supertech inconel valves +1mm
Supertech ss intake valves +1mm
Viton valve seals
Supertech valve guides
TTP big bore lifters
Fidanza adjustible cam gears silver
Ported and polished head
Cosworth L19 H11 headstuds
Cosworth 1.3mm head gasket
CP pistons 9.0/1
Groden Aluminum Rods
Cosworth race rod bearings
Cosworth race Main Bearings
Cosworth thrust washers
ARP Main Studs
Line bored w/torque plate
AMS concentric shaft race shaft
Balance shaft eliminator-
new front case w/ oil pump
oil pan sealed
Fluidampr Engine damper / crank pulley
GATES Blue Kevlar timing belt kit
water pump and water pipe, pulley
oil dipstick tube, stick
turbo oil return line

Engine is built for stock-1000hp and redline stock-9800rpms

There are a lot of places to get an engine from. I personally didn't buy a used one because you never know its condition.

My motor was trashed and could be rebuilt. If the block was good, then I would have just had it rebuilt.
