I was in the same boat as you a few years ago, but I was also getting married. I needed to get of a money pit and had to "grow up". No one pressured me except myself. So I was set on selling my evo, but still driving something I liked. I bought a 370z. It worked for a while especially since I left it stock. Then I needed more money to buy a house so I got rid of the Z and leased a Grand Cherokee. It worked. I paid for my wedding and bought a house 9 months later. All in all, i was "out of the game" for about 3.5 years. I looked mature driving to work and I felt "grown up". But, I hated almost every minute of it. I missed all of my prior cars.

BUT, I was able to do some pretty good things in that time. Now that i'm settled, and divorced, I can do whatever the hell I want. I bought a 15 Evo X and I keep it a nice stock daily driver and have a separate toy to have fun with. I vote you sell your car, get your **** straight, and come back better than ever.

I just made the worst series of decisions in my life.

Evo wasn't running properly, shot out a spark plug while driving, front shocks were leaking a little bit, I had it parked at my work for 2 weeks and one of the cleaning people asked if I wanted to sell it on Tuesday. I said sure, $13,800.

I was thinking what would be a fun, practical, good compromise car. For some strange reason 4 door VW GTI came to mind. Maybe because I heard an advertisement on the radio. I really have no idea.

On Tuesday I was tired of driving a pick up truck that my friend lent me and went to the VW dealership after work. I looked online and saw $1999 down with $269/month payment. Which seemed affordable.

Get to the dealership, find dark gray 6 speed, cool plaid cloth interior. They run my credit, 710, apparently is a "B" rating and they claim the best they can do it $4500 down and $390/month for 48 months. I tell them I'll do 1500 down, and no more than 400/month after tax. I was stupid and agreed to 1500 down and a 404/mo payment, owing 14,000 if I want to buy the car at the end of the lease.

I have 10,000 miles per year, and have to pay $0.20/mile if I go over. I asked if the car had the cool LSD I heard years my friend was talking about. They said oh yeah sure...but turns out that only comes with performance package. Didn't find that until later.

The cleaning person came yesterday with 13,800 cash and purchased the evo, and fixed the spark plug problem for only $300. Saw a clean silver evo, perfect ride height cruising down the street on my way to work in the rearview mirror, as it drove next to me, I realized it was the car I just sold

Once everything set in, I was furious at myself, and my girlfriend for always talking **** about my evo, how it's a teenagers car. I am so depressed when I get to work, I'm on edge about to snap.

I calculated how much I drove the Evo per month which turned out to be 1667 miles/mo. It's going to cost me $8000 when I return GTI, or I will just pay the remainder $14000, which means I'm effectively paying over $35000 for a base 4 door GTI.

I asked dealership if I can return it 12 hours later. They said no. I don't know why I didn't think to look to lease an Evo X or at least inquire. I think if I put down 13800, I could have financed for 404/month.

Sad, Sad, Sad day, strongly considering breaking up with girlfriend, joining uber and driving this stupid GTI in all my new found free time.

We've all done something dumb in our past. Especially in our younger years. I've sold a couple cars which I regret later on. But we all tend to find nice cars to replace them in time. Enjoy the GTI and look for something to replace it when the time is right. As for your girlfriend take a deep breath and don't do something you'll regret again.

Woah, hold on...

I know in Nevada you have 72 hours to return a brand new car, check cali law, don't let the dealer say no if the law says you can. You got screwed on that lease. I know there are pricing laws for purchases, not sure on leases. I would check around and make sure they're allowed to have you end up paying that much for the car.

And dump the b!tch...

OP, I'm an investment analyst for a wealth management company myself, and I will never let someone dictate what car I drive.

Money. Ding, ding, ****ing ding, this is money.

To the whole house/no house thing - at least here in the North East you're looking at about $1,250/month to rent a 3 bedroom house downtown that the has been beat to **** by college students or Section 8. You want something nice? Try $2,000-$3,000/month for a 3 bedroom house, you may get away with a 2 bedroom apartment or condo for $1,600/month, maybe.

I'm not sure if any of you calculate what your rent payments could get you in a house, but almost $2,000 a month is nearly a $200,000 house (mortgage, insurance and taxes included), and that's the lower average price for a 2-3 bedroom house built after 1980 here in upstate, New York.

Additionally, by paying rent, you are not only paying someone else's mortgage for them, as nemsin mentioned, but you're building equity in YOUR LANDLORD'S house.

I tried to tell them. But some people think that renting is the way to go. A house is like a good stock that you can live in.

This is way off topic now, but I don't think anyone said buying a house was categorically a bad idea. Generally, you pay about $500 for every $100k borrowed. IIRC, OP lives in the Bay Area (so do I). In the Bay Area, you're lucky to get into anything for less than an advertised price of $800k, unless you want a crappy commute and to live in the burbs. And then add that most places properties are selling for 30% above asking, for cash. And then add the scarcity issue. I'm glad so many of you live in places where you can afford to buy a house, but for some people it's just not feasible, at least not now. My $1200 rent controlled apartment in one of SF's nicest neighborhoods is a no brainier compared to a $5000 monthly mortgage payment to live in some bullcrap neighborhood in the city. But by all means, please try to tell me my decision to stay put and save money until this housing issue plateaus is irrational. 🙃

So at what age (if ever) do you plan on starting your 30 yr. mortgage? Or do you plan on staying in that rent controlled apt. forever? By "saving" money with today interest rates you are likely losing the race against inflation.

I'll start my (x)-year mortgage when the market is right. Buying a house because you are a certain age makes no sense to me. Until I'm ready, I'll play the market to my advantage. And right now that's renting an apartment at 50% below market rates. Glad to see you're all running the rat race, but I think critically about long term financial investments. Would you buy Apple stock at its all time high because you "think" it might continue to go up? No. That's silly. Why would you treat home buying any differently? Happy so many people want to "own" a house. But doing so just to do so, or because your parents did, makes little financial sense. Nor is it everyone's priority. Some people would prefer to spend the money on travel. Or other things. Just because buying a house made sense to you doesn't mean it makes sense for everyone else. I'm not telling anyone to buy a house, or not to buy house. I'm just encouraging people to think seriously about their choices. Conclusory statements like "you should buy a house" do little to further a constructive dialogue based on a person's actual needs.
