Accidentally shifted from 4th to 3rd....
It all depends on how the car was tuned. I'm sure you have a rev limiter set, but that won't prevent a mechanical over rev like what happens when going from a high gear to a lower.
Next time you come in to get the car tuned, ask the tuner what he has set the rev limiter to. That will depend on your cam/valve spring combo, among other things.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That is correct. You are on your own if you mechanically over rev the motor....ask me how I know lol. OP if you don't hear any strange noises and there were no nasty bits in the fluids that were just changed, I'm guessing you are ok
Like someone said, as long as the RPM's didn't go too high you should be fine. The clutch may have slipped enough to save you too if you didn't let it all the way out.
When I money shifted my E36 a year ago on track, I instantly knew it was all bad lol. Tambourine idle wasn't a great sound. Lol she still survived 4 more track days

The rev limiter is electronic and prevents engine RPMs rising beyond the safe limit. Selecting a wrong gear, however, will result in a mechanical over-rev. (sorry read the prev page and did not realise everyone has already pointed this out)

More than likely, your clutch would have taken the brunt of it to be honest, but it sounds like its probably ok. the 4g63 motor is very strong and most people go with builds that allow over 10k rpms...if it was just a hit third, realized it, shifted out, im willing to bet your A-Okay. as stated before, sounds like a situation where your clutch took the brunt and everything else probably didn't even notice or care(if parts could care) learn to walk before you run
good luck and have fun man!

its never ideal to have a jump in rpm that roughly, but unless your putting down serious power, i doubt it did damage. listen to idel and rev to 2-3k ish, no strange noise, no valve/piston damage, no problem.
