Unhappy Accidentally shifted from 4th to 3rd....

So yea, I was pulling out of 4th to overtake and instead of going into 5th i went into 3rd . Still getting used to the evo gearbox to say the least....Anyways car drives fine, no burning smells, boost still pulls like normal, no leaking. I was with my gf in her cooper S as she shifted from 5th into 2nd (that hurt my soul) and her cars fine.

Guess i'm asking how tough the head and tranny are on the evo 8's? Is there a possibility even though everything feels fine that i did some damage? I'm hearing horror stories about valves and pistons having a boxing match...

Thanks in advance.

If it feels fine, runs fine, idles fine, sounds fine, and drives fine. It's fine.

Rad thanks. I just picked this up a few days ago and was heading home from having the spark plugs and fluids done when this happened so i was a bit horrified to hear some of the potential repercussions haha

It also depends what revs you were in when you mis-shifted. If you were close to redline and went 4th to 3rd then let the clutch out completely, then you might have over-revved it a little. Although I don't think it would hurt it.

If you weren't at high revs, and/or didn't completely let out the clutch, then I think you are completely fine.

I was definitely around 5-6k when I mis-shifted but I don't think I let the clutch out all the way before I realized what had happened. Hard to say though it happened so fast ...

According this https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ml#post3265610

You probably dropped it back into 3rd at or just slightly over the 7,000 red-line. Other guys who've over-reved their car might be able to tell you the significance of that but the rev counter does get up to 9,000.

Yea according to that graph I was probably at the top of the 3rd gear band at 80ish mph... Probably just more scary than anything lol thanks for the help!

FYI it doesn't make sense to shift to 5th to pass someone unless you're going 110+mph. Sounds like you were in the right gear already. You would only accelerate more slowly in 5th and put more load on your engine.

Unless I missunderstand and you were done with the passing and going to 5th to cruise. In that case nevermind.

True dat, if your car was properly tuned you would have enough torque in your lower gears without having to use the 5th, unless you're trying to pass a lambo?

I think you need to get used to shifting the car normally first. It's not as buttery smooth as a 91 mr2 turbo, and you can't shift it like you can a honda.

He downshifted to 4th to pass I'm guessing and was going back to 5th gear after he passed them

either way, 6k in 4th is a lot of passing...3rd gear will get you up to 90 anyhow so you'd have to have been FLYING to do any damage to the car by going 4-3 shift

You should have the rev limiter to stop you over revving anyway, because your new make sure it's not disabled. My 6 speed I am always going from 4th to 5th instead of third when coming into a corner, I'm finding it still hard to get used to the box, most street cars gear boxes just fall into place but the Evo you need to place it in gear more, I find this a pain in the butt to get used to especially in the track. Some times I'll take it to a set of twisties somewhere and just just it up and through the gears at slow speed just to get used to it which cutting down on my false shifting, I'm not sure if I have a short shifter in it as the feel in gears is always lacking but that's Evo's get used to it jack lol

Genuinely curious how people miss gears. I felt goofy driving a ferrari with a gated shifter but never went from a high gear high rpm into a low gear.

Surprises me as well. I guess if the driver isn't paying attention to where their hand is moving during their shifts it can happen. Some people get too into the moment and just push straight up or down on the stick.

What I really don't get are those who shift from 4th to 1st. How the hell did their transmission even allow for that and why did they pull the stick towards them ?
