Cams
Cams
Hello everyone,
This is probably a really dumb question but its a question. I'm about to put in some S2 cams with springs. Do I have to break them in or can I tune it right away? If I do have to break them in what is the procedure?
Reason I'm asking is that my mechanic who's doing the install is telling me that I have to drive the car for 500 miles before I tune the car. But how can I drive the car with cams and no tune?
Thanks in advance,
Ben

From what Ive read, there are varied opinions on this issue
The cam instructions from the manufacturer should note if there is a procedure to follow
Heres a few comments to back it up

On my Honda I installed some pretty big cams with some pretty stiff valve springs and went to dyno right away. After that went and did a track day. I inspected them recently and they're fine. No abnormal wear. Just be sure to use some break in lube when you install them.
I've done multiple cam swaps and have never done a break in period. I've also never had any issues. The main concern is proper installation and lubricate the lobes with oil BEFORE starting the car. That's really the only risk for metal and metal friction. It'll be pretty tough to put 500 miles on the car without a tune to compensate for the cams.

Not sure where you are on this--yes, there is break in procedure...You simply have to keep the revs up upon starting the car to make sure you have good oil pressure for at lest 20min..in other words start the car bring it up to say 2000 rpm then vary the throttle between 2-3k for 20min. That will break the cams in-- lube is the most important piece..after that go get a tune. Yes you can run it without a tune, its not going to run rt and will go lean but its drivable to get it where you going stay low in rpm and off the gas.
