Hey Guys,

This is my first, official, post on this forum and I feel like bringing this thread back as I am in the same situation.

Background: 26 yo, 750 credit score, credit cards for 4 years, low debt, $45k income at the moment having just graduated this previous December. I have wanted an Evo since 2004 when I first saw them (I was 14 at the time).

I have been searching around for a loan to the point where I am pulling my hair out. There seems to be many hoops to jump through here.. The biggest issue I am finding is that the Evo I want to finance is $32k from an (independent?) dealership. NADA value for said Evo is ~$21000. Now I can put some money down but I would prefer to be approved for around $28k so that I know I would not feel like I am being stretched.

I have spoken with numerous lenders and credit unions that do look at KBB (~$31k for the particular Evo I am looking at) and Black Book but it seems I do not meet their requirements or eligibility.
IE:
JJ Best - I do not have any prior mortgages or car payments.
USAA - I have not served nor has anybody in my IMMEDIATE family.
PSECU - looks like they have very narrow eligibility EDIT: Might be able to join PSECU w/ a $20 donation. I will give them a call today to find out if this is still valid. https://creditboards.com/forums/inde...owtopic=452491

So far PenFed is the only one that seems like I have the green light, but again, they are using NADA values @ ~$21k.

Is there anybody out there without strict eligibility requirements that will take in a regular person AND use means of valuating a car other than NADA???

Thank you in advance and sorry for writing a book

What year Evo? A $10k difference is ridiculous.

you should keep looking, you have a vehicle it seems so take your time. $32k is absurd.
you are digging your inescapable grave with that $32k car.

you should be eyeing the ones thats high teens low 20's, thats the average range for a low mileage one.

So it's $31k for an VIII/IX?? If so, F**k that dealership. I don't care how new it is. Hell no. I'd go buy something else, at that price point.

I appreciate all of your words of caution.. But hear me out.

It's an Evo 9 MR (2006 obviously) w/ 26,100 miles on it. Red. Clean. Very lightly modded. Appears to have spent its life in southern states. Will confirm that 100% w/carfax. To me it is almost my unicorn Evo. It's just missing a sunroof, Evo 8 Enkie's (personal preference), and a 5 spd (I like the 6 spd but want the strength of a 5).

And being a Jeep guy, aka no extensive experience with tuners or Evo's in general, I do not want to get one with what I consider higher mileage (70k +). I know, I know <120k is essentially an unbroken-in Evo. But I want one that feels almost new without being an X. I don't want to immediately have to worry about clutch replacements or 60k maintenance, or other typical wear items going out the instant I get the thing...

I've driven an X and while it was a blast to drive, I still can't get over my Rally Red Evo 8/9 dream.

I got my 06 IX last Jan for 19k fully financed through RBFCU. Think they only service Texas though. If you have the credit worthiness anything is possible.

These guys sell evos, and will finance anybody. Buddy bought his evo there with limit credit history, as long as you have a down payment. Chris will find a way to get you into an evo

It would have to have 0 miles for me to fork out $31k.
I love my car, but common sense would have to come into play, for me.
That being said, it's your money and your car. Do what you have to, dude.

No offense but you guys are nuts lol. Just got of college with debt and you want to get in more debt? I do love my evo but not enough to let it drag down my finance. I bought my evo mr ix with 90k miles for $11k cash. Given the driver shocks were blown and also needed brake replacement but that's not a big deal. I just think you guys need to make smarter choices.

This is my list of priorities before I even think about buying toys ( and I do have a lot of toys).

1. Graduate college
2. Find solid career ( anything over $60k should be good
3. Save money buy house
4. Get married
5. Buy evo
6. Buy motorcycle
7. Buy boat
8. Find a mistress ( I have a gf I befriended in Vietnam. Don't tell my wife!!! Lol

To me, it is almost the dream Evo. But, yes, the price tag does make me worry a little bit. But at the same time, an Evo X would be $38k+ for a 2015 Final Edition.. If I were to consider any other new car besides an Evo it would also be $38k+. Hell, just for kicks, I humored my GF and built a new Accord online and the damn thing came out to $33k!

My biggest fear is winding up with something that is an imposter. IE looks good but in the end wasn't well taken care of. So that is why my goal is for such low miles. Maybe I am being too picky and maybe have seen too many Jeep guys buy absolute turd's without knowing it. The other thing that doesn't help is that my heart is set on Rally Red... Don't get me wrong, I am taking all your input into consideration and I appreciate it.

For what it's worth though:
1. I have no college debt; my mother, rest her soul, made sure of that.

2. I've got the career started ($45k starting.. less than what I wanted but shouldn't be too long to jump up higher).

3. Unfortunately I am just about to leave my childhood home long story short (estate BS w/my mother's passing). We're downsizing into an apartment for the time being so we can save a little.

4. Already bought the ring (paid cash up front). My GF (note: have not proposed YET), has like $15k in savings for the wedding

5. I've been itching my Evo for 12 years now. In the last year and a half (actually 3 years), I've been through so much and have lost a lot (death). I feel like I owe it to myself.. Perhaps I am a little biased. LOL.

So it's your "unicorn" car except two MAJOR components... It doesn't have a 5 speed, and it doesn't have a sun roof. How exactly does that make it a unicorn car? It's still not worth $31k...

These guys cars are really high mileage and for ridiculous prices, almost 27k for 124000 miles, you can get one at a dealer for 24k with 60-70k miles.

Its good that they finance anybody but not at those prices, i will continue to search.

and to Blackzj2 i feel you man i have been wanting one of these for yearssss, i come from a country where we had evo 1 all the way up to 10, i have wanted one since the evolution 3, i am working towards my 9 also in rally red

The sunroof is not a make it/break it deal. Regarding the 6 spd, I can always swap to a 5 spd in the future. If the Evo had more mods to it and/or was a higher mileage then I would be weary of the 6 spd.

In my eyes, I am never going to find the an Evo that is 100% perfect for what I want.

I know $31k is steep but I keep looking at the alternatives.. New car at $38k+.

If it makes any difference I have $5k to put down, my buddy wants to buy my one Jeep for $2500, and I have an 05 Escalade that I inherited that I could probably get round $6k for.

Keep at it, friend. As I always keep telling my best friend, "..one of these days..."

and I agree, that guy kind of has high prices for what they are.
