Shifting problems

I had my door open and went to put my car in reverse and it sounds like metal touching metal before I put it in gear. Almost like the shifter is hitting my exhaust? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did it do that just once?

You may have forced reversed & got some gear grind. Reverse must be engaged slowly & sometimes letting the clutch out very slowly will enable it to engage w/out grind

It was before I put it in gear. If I move the shifter slowly towards reverse it's definitely hitting something right before it goes into gear

well check your shifter linkage on the trans under the hood. sounds like grind from what you are explaining.

It's not grinding, you can hear metal on metal clanking like it's hitting exhaust or something else then goes away once it's in gear

If it's definitely a clanging sound, it probably happens when you push the clutch in and your engine drops rpms which causes more vibration from the engine shaking the mounts and moving. If that's the case the engine shutter causes the exhaust to hit the metal heat shroud around it underneath the car. I went through this with both my evos. On both cars I had to remove the sheat metal heat sheild to get rid of the noise.
