Hello, when my oem starter went out a bit ago I took it in to get a rebuild and the guy showed me that my problem was some pretty worn out/smashed (small) springs. Has anyone ever messed with replacing these or other components themselves? My current starter is having the same issue again and I was hoping to crack it open myself Thanks!

 

My dad died when I was 9 making me the mechanic in the family. I remember rebuilding the starter from my Mother's car when I was 10. So, if a ten year old can do it - possible. Check if parts are available.

 

Thats pretty impresive for a 10 year old. I know its possible I was just wondering if anyone has experience with evo starters in particular. I'm going to take mine off and have a look inside

 

Maybe the springs that he showed me at the shop were the brush springs. My car normally takes a few cranks to start but now the starter begins to grind before it can fire up

 

There's a large section in the FSM on the starter - tells you everything. If you are working on a car you should have its FSM.
