Hey, haven't got an evo but i am currently looking into buying one. But the thing that worries me is when and how do i know when it's time for an engine rebuild??

Model i am currently interested in Evo 8 FQ-340 MR

You can have a qualified shop perform a compression test and a leak down test to verify the condition of the top end. And you could do an oil analysis to see fi the engine is making any metal indicative of excess wear.

Actually u can also buy a compression tester and test it yourself.. its quite simple..
check youtube on how to do a compression test on an evo.

Don't buy a car that's got a catch can fitted because their only purpose is to disguise / hide a broken engine.

I've been working on cars since before you were born.

 

Im running strong on e85 and 500+ hp for 4 years now. 150k here. No issues.

You can usually tell the condition of a engine by.

1.looking for sludge build up.
Looking in the oil cap and looking at the cylinder head. If its nice and silver its been maintained. If its black or bronzing it hasnt gotten very well maintained oil wise.

2. Compression test.

I believe the spec is 150 psi. If they are near 7% of spec or each other the engine shall be considered healthy.

If they are below spec. Youd follow up with a cylinder leak down test and see were the loss of compression is going. I.e piston rings,valves,head gasket. Etc etc.

Norris Designs their name, and are only 10 mins away from me. But i probs won't be going with big power in the evo, 400 or 420 will be more than enough for me on and off track!
