To keep it or to call it, need some help/advice

Hey all, this is my first post on here but I’ve been a reading for a while now. I drive a built 2005 evo viii but unfortunately the heads are damaged, damaged valves, damaged cylinders and I’m basically needing a new top end rebuild. I have zero idea if I were to do it myself, and my mechanic base price will roughly 5k for the rebuild itself. The shell has 160,000 miles and I am on the end of just wanting to sell it. If I were to sell it as is, what do you think would be a fair price or what do you guys think would be my best option here? I feel like Kelly blue book isn’t always accurate in pricing so I’m looking at other opinions here. Thanks all for taking the time to read this

p.s. I also have a guy who is willing to pay me straight 5k cash (friend of the mechanic, slightly suspicious) to just take it off my hands

Edit: the original reason why I started having things looked at was stalling coming to a stop and having a boost or fuel cut issue, that led to getting a tune, which led to more problems unfortunately. I’m afraid the rebuild would still not fix the original issue and so even if the rebuild happened, I don’t know if all my problems would be fixed.

Hey, welcome @accl10

Would have been better if you had joined years ago instead of under these circumstances

W/out knowing more details on your EvO, hard to say what its worth w/the issues you noted w/both the long & short block

5K sounds like a give-a-way price if its in good condition w/a working drivetrain

Throw up some pics of the engine bay, interior & exterior if you like

5k sounds high , I would get some other estimates and yeah I agree 5k to dump it to the mechanics friend seems awfully low and suspicious to me also . Good luck man!!

i would spend the money and pay for a new built block and head. pretty much like buying a new car. but thats my opinion. i wouldn't just give it away for 5k.

$5k is super low lol you could probably sell the rolling shell for more than that.

Fix it. You're in Washington state, call English Racing and get 'em on it. Any other car will make you sad.

Thank you all for the replies! I’ll try to get to all of them. I’m at work but it’s been racking my mind.

I don’t have any exterior pictures at the moment

Just buy a used engine, swap it and reflash the ecu to stock and start over with someone reputable who can actually tune the thing. Or ship it to Georgia. I’ll pay 5k plus shipping for her if it only needs a long block and is in good shape otherwise.
