Anyone know about wiring up external fuel pumps in boot??
Was just wondering about wiring up my twin pump surge tank in my boot, my mate is an electrician and will do it for nothing If we can figure it out. We made a loom up but just wondering how they should be done, I’m using a link g4+ which my tuner says it needs to be wired to that and have a standalone circuit and be switched via the ecu.
Any help or photos would be brill!
I am currently running 2 fuel pumps in my car (in series). What I did was take the original fuel pump output from the ECU (+12vdc), and split that to 2 relays. I then fused the relays with their own 12vdc source and connected the relays to the pumps. This will take the load off the original fuel pump circuit and put the load on the 2 relays since 1 relay is only switching on 1 pump. This is how I would recommend you power these additional pumps as you do not want to overload the original fuel pump circuit of the car. All the pumps will then turn on at the same time when the ECU sends the +12vdc signal to your new relays.
Your electrician friend should be able to hook up a relay with no trouble at all off this fuel pump signal.

awesome thank you! I’ve got a 450 intank feeding these two pumps in the boot pictured, I was going to hardwire the in tank one too with a relay to get better voltage and the most out of it as it’s just on the stock wiring and I read up it’s good to hardwire that what do you think? And then the twins in the boot I’ll do the way you’ve said off the ecu trigger??
also what relays should you recommend using, 40a ones??

Hey there! You should definitely put a relay on your 450 as well. That is how my setup is done too. There is a signal wire (the one currently driving your 450) that you will need to split to all 3 relays you will put in your car. That is what I meant by the signal from the ECU. As for the relays, 30 or 40 amp relays are plenty. They should not draw more than 10 amps each under worse case scenarios. I hope this helps!

That is kinda odd as the stock wiring can be used as the trigger for all the relays. This is my preferred way to do it and will be safe when using this original fuel pump output as a trigger for the relays. I wonder if they meant that you should not power them all off the factory wiring. The way I described above allows the ECU to turn the pumps on and off as it would have from the factory.

yeah okay cool mate I’ve ordered some wire and relays etc to do it all! That guy is saying to take the trigger off the ecu ground wire? Where is that? Is that not the same as the one that goes to the intank pump plug?

The trigger wire for the pumps is actually a 12v signal that turns on the stock pump directly. Just show him that pic I posted above and he will be able to run with it. Good luck! Please post pics.

yeah I’ll post pics for sure! What does he mean though by getting the trigger from the ecu ground? Does he mean where the ecu plugs in and take a wire from there back or something? Just curious

I am not sure why he is asking for a ground trigger. He is most likely just wanting to make sure you are getting a signal from the ECU when to turn on and off the pumps. You do not want to just hook this up to the ignition circuit. Show him the image and you will be good. That uses the correct signal since it re-uses the original fuel pump power on signal that came from the ECU.

hi man I’m just getting this all done now, just wondering there is two small black wires, one comes on and gives 12v I believe as the trigger but not sure what the other one does?? What’s the best way to differ which one is which? Pics here!
