Evo IV Engine 44 ign coil/power transistor system
Evo IV Engine 44 ign coil/power transistor system
Hey guys, been having horrible luck lately. Really a test for my love of this car. Very cold here, drove to the gym no problem. Come outside, misfire. Barely made it to the next parking spot. Got a ride home to eat some dinner and catch my thoughts. Before starting it back up I took a look at the CEL. 4 long flashes and 4 short flashes. This brought me to ign coil/power transistor system being the problem. Before going home and researching this I figured I would dig around some more. Started right up, no problem. Took a look at spark plugs and they looked fine for just changing them several months ago. The only problem I noticed was that the rubber was broke at the bottom of both coil packs. One was off completely and the other was like slid all the way up. Reseated the plugs and got myself home without hesitation.
For an Engine 44 CEL "ign coil/power transistor system", is there anything specific I should be taking a look at? I do not see any troubleshooting procedures in the EvoScanManual I found a while back. (May not know where to look) I wanted to go ahead and disconnect the coils or wires while it was misfiring to see if I can pinpoint maybe something but obviously was unable to. Took if around base for about 20 minutes had no hesitation or misfire. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide! Parts are hard to get in general and I have a even harder time here in Japan. May look at picking up some coilpacks and hoping for the best if no other insight is given.

Update to maybe help some folks in the future....
Intermittently I would get misfire that would be constant, throwing CEL 44 (Flashing method). After letting it sit for a bit I was able to come back and get her going again. This happened for two days. Finally had some time to look into it more. Decided to shoot power and ground to both coil packs, everything looked good. Also shot the coil itself and everything looked as it should. I then swapped the two coil packs and waited for the problem to come back. Once it came back I just unplugged the suspected bad coil pack and sure enough it was now cylinders 1 and 4 not working whereas before was cylinders 2 and 3. Parts on order (PN: MD363442).MD363552.
