17yr old newbie

By 17 I mean years I been a member damn time flies. Pretty easy to reset password by the way.

I owned both an 03 evo 8 and an evo ix. Pretty much all bolt ons plus cams and a tune at rre with scot gray.

Im currently looking at a 2005 ssl electron blue viii stock engine except for a hks intake, licp and an intercooler. It has some other mods like tanabe coilovers, bushings, rear sway bar, 2 piece rotors, legit jdm rear bumper, enkie nt01 and titanium exhaust maybe few other things I dont remeber.

Problem is it has a bad clutch and a 5th gear grind. Besides that always been garaged and the owner/ a friend has done all the maintenence diffs/tcas/trans every few months. Ive seen the car for the last 5-6 years and everytime I offfer to but it hes always said no. Till now.

The asking price is 20k and considering I paid 28k for a brand new evo 9 a part of me doesnt know if its actually worth it or is its that nostalgia whispering to my wallet that itll be ok.

question is if the car is worth it considering repairs are gonna be 4-5k so ill be into it about 25k.

forgot to mention has 75k miles.

Not too bad, if you REALLY want the car and all but the trans is in great shape.
I've overpaid for things that I've really wanted before. This wouldn't be too bad, in comparison.
$28,000 in 2006 is about $36,000 today.

Watching Americans complain about their cheap evo prices makes me feel depressed. But really op you cant look at it that way. As said before, adjust for inflation since every day it seems like money is fast becoming closer to value of toilet paper. You can't get any car for the same price you did 17 years ago. The evo 8/9 had been out of production for over 15 years already so you're going to have to pay more for less.

Consider yourself lucky, and if you have any doubts I will put your mind at ease. The evo you're looking at, after its cleared the border then repaired and put on the road would cost around $40k where I am and our buying power in Canada is slightly greater than yours in the USA.

Alright @awitron

Great to see your EvO interest is on High! Let us know if you lock in on this beauty. $20K for a clean EvO, even though there maybe some mechanicals needed sounds about right in todays market

Cheers, Joe

An evo is a car you WANT not NEED. Many people buy classic car shells for a price you can buy a decent running car. Having said that, the price he is asking seems more than fair to me. Knowing the guy and the history is a big plus. If you view this car as a financial investment i would pass. There are newer cars with more features and in certain areas better performance. If your buying this car for happiness investment, itll be worth every penny.

I keep telling people i cant come to terms with selling my evo to buy my life long dream car (Corvette) because i think that highly of the driving experience. And im not talking about all out performance numbers, simply how the car makes me feel driving it. Of course emotional attachment as well. Good luck on your decision!

Evos might be like the 964/993 911's, their prices have gone up compared to a brand new 911. Mainly bc a lot of people love the old school feel instead of the fancy computerized ones....

I'm sure there's more older 911's than there's Evo 8/9 but the supply & demand is where it stands.

There's always room to negotiate, Cash Money Talks!

The people that want to buy Evos don't have a ton of money. They also want to buy the car to toss around because that what makes them so fun. The other guys, that have the money, aren't particularly interested in mass-reproduced, Japanese sedans, save for the random, eclectic collector. That's not enough to keep prices high.
Outside this forum, Evos aren't as popular as other collectibles. Yes, we love our cars but not everyone else does. Most of the people I run into don't even know what it is.
I see prices staying where they are, only due to inflation ($25k Evo today is probably about $18k in 2006).
Yeah, you will have the occasional Evo owner who wants his car to be worth $1 million or a guy who just paid a ton for his and is hoping he's not going to lose money later. Those guys will preach on about how the Evo is going to be worth GTR money someday. I doubt it. Not in the US, anyway.

Do you think mk4 supra owners are rich either? No. They just found themselves in a market of supply vs demand. I remember guys taking this way about the r34/33/32 gtr's when only ten years go one could be bought for the exact same price as an evo 9. This isn't exclusive to the evo, the fact is that every 90's early 2000's Japanese car with a decent enough following is going to sky rocket. Its just simple math. These cars aren't going anywhere and there's is only less of them every day. Nostalgia and a maturing crowd all play a part in prices for niche cars like the evo 8/9 rising.

I wouldn't say I have a ton of money but like most evo owners im willing to put alot of it there (even though I probably shouldn't lol) driving the prices of these cars to what they probably shouldn't be. I will be searching for a low mileage red evo 9 rs in about 5 years time, my budget will be about 60k CAD but I fear prices will climb much higher by the time im ready to actually pull the trigger on one. Also check out price trends. They didn't just rise with inflation, a $25k evo is going to be in much worse condition, super high mileage and will probably need some work compared to what you got for the same price just 5 years ago.

I guess we'll see.

Right now, it looks like my best bet is to sell my car to someone in Canada.

as for a low mileage, 20yr old Evo? good luck with that one. the only one you're gonna find will be owned by one of those eclectic collectors I'm talking about. The rest of us drive them.
