Hey guys, I figured id share this with you as im at a major cross roads with my 2003 Evo 8 at this point in time. I purchased this car 2 years ago from the original owner out of PA who was an older gentleman that daily drove the car for the last 17 years. There isn't one ding on this whole car, nor is the body thrashed and falling apart. all vin matched body panels, all original paint, ZERO accidents, Its still on the stock engine, trans and even the original stock clutch at 154k. All maintenance records accounted for. I knew there was some rust on the bottom of the radiator support which wasn't an issue as i had already purchased a new lower support and crossmember from Mitsubishi to change when I was ready. Flash forwards a couple months, I was changing my rear swap bar and decided while under there i would start cleaning up some of the surface rust that was under there. I started to really look at the rear chassis legs up by where the rear end mounts and i noticed it was extra crusty. I started tapping it with a screw driver handle it and literally just started opening up a window on both sides!
After discovering this heart dropping issue, now im at a crossroads as i really do love the car and the evo platform as a whole and have since they came out. Is the current state of this rust too unsafe to continue driving? Is it even worth the time and effort its going to take to drop the rear suspension and track down a pair of chassis legs to cut out and weld in? Id love to hear some feedback from other rusty evo long haulers. Check out the pictures below. Thanks guys
