Evo 9 dies while driving
Evo 9 dies while driving
Okay so I have an 06 that I bought in October 2021 and 2 days later it took a dump on me. I tore it down and found nothing wrong mechanically so I re-BUILT it over the winter. I have been driving it for a few months now and it has just over 7k miles on it and I have been fixing bugs as they come up with the help of a few good fellas on here including Biggiesacks who was a huge help. I am stumped at the moment. I can be driving the car down the highway at 65 just cruising or sitting in a drive-thru and the car will die on me. If I let off the throttle it will run and engine break but when I give it throttle it dies. It seems to have started happening as the weather got hotter (may be something may be nothing.. I believe the former). On a cold start it will fire right up and run like a dream. I can drive 25-30 minutes and no problems... but if I sit at a light for too long it may stall or if I leave the light and the engine bay temps rose due to minimal airflow it will die (ps. I don't have the louvers for the hood opening the seller didn't have them on when I bought it). In the morning its about 20 degrees cooler than in the afternoon on my way home from work. I just replaced the exhaust cam sensor because a few friends say they get really hot being just above the manifold especially since there's no heat shield. When the car dies I can leave it there for a few hours and once its cooled down it will fire right up no problem and the process starts all over again. If I kill it at a light since I have an ACT 2600 single (which can make anyone look like a newb from time to time) it may fire back up but then immediately die and wont start again until it has cooled down. While driving all gauges and temps and AFR's are perfect and no red flags to me and I haven't got a single CEL for it. I have Evoscan and have logged for a whole drive. I caught it in a log one time but haven't done it twice because I haven't spent the time to get stranded again. There are no oil leaks or coolant leaks or burning of any fluids. I could really use some help here as its my daily and its becoming a real inconvenience to have to be picked up on the side of the road and I'm tired of leaving my Evo on the side of the road all over town ha. Something is telling me to replace the MAF but they are like $700 which id rather go SD for that price. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
What are your long term fuel trims looking like? LTFT Low and LTFT Mid.
You should do a boost leak test and fix any leaks. This will also find vacuum leaks. Inspect the spark plugs and make sure they are all looking good, uniform, and properly gapped. That's where I would recommend starting anyway.
