Labor for replacing Mivec Cam Gear

Hey guys, looking to see what you all feel sounds about right for labor to replace the mivec cam gear. Mechanic quoted it as labor to remove and replace timing belt, about 540 dollars, but a lot of the threads I’m reading State that the timing belt does not need to be removed to replace the gear. I’m wondering if he’s actually gonna remove it or just used that as a labor estimate.

also, how long do those cam gears typically last? I’m at about 150k miles.

thoughts?

a mechanic that is familiar with evos can do the gear swap without fully removing the timing belt and messing up the timing. but the book for the cam gear swap would probably call for timing belt removal and install. so the labor is about right.

When was the last time the timing belt / balance shaft belt was replaced? If your past 50% service life, it would be a good time to just get the whole job done.

There is a filter element for the Mivec cam gear. Since you are replacing the gear, you will probably want to make sure that gets replaced too.
