About a month ago it stalled in traffic and would stall as soon as the clutch was pushed in. Im not sure the level of abuse from previous owners but I pulled the whole power train thinking it was the clutch and found metal in the oil pan and have discover very obvious crank walk and just wana know if I can save this or just have to find a new engine ive allready order a lot of rebuild stuff (new gaskets, full timeing set,and now a crankshaft etc.) before I noticed the crank walk and it only damaged things faceing the transmission side but not super bad or deep so im very invested at this point but ive upload some picture of the damage any advice would be awesome.
Darn, So all I have is a basic caliper right now so all i can do is front an back clearance on the seats. the thickness of the bearing seats are in mm on this picture I dont know what an undamaged block would be comparatively but the new thrust bearings sit sung would a machine shop be able to build up on the block and carriage and machine it down? And if not is there a way to tell a 4 block form a 5&6 i know the have 3 peice thrust and ive heard its not much but you do have to change parts an wires to put them in a 4.
I'm no expert on engine building so hopefully someone else can chime in for you. Might be worth asking some shops as well but my gut says its done for.
Dang, we were hopeing to keep it original as possible but that seems to be harder the more parts that break. do you know of a thread or page that has the differences of the 4 engine to the 5&6? Id like to figure out what i need for a swap if I have to
The easiest way is to put the crank back in the block and then use a flat head screw driver or pry bar and see how much movement you by pushing the crank towards the transmisson side. If the thrust clearance is too high then you can't save it. You can measure this thrust clearance by using your calipers.

The differences between the 4 and the 5/6 engine have to be pretty subtle. Maybe things like cam profile and injectors. The 5/6 ECU was completely different though.
