The handling of the Elise is it's strong point. It isn't really any faster than an EVO in a straight line.
For twice the money as an EVO (not a fair comparison), the upcoming Porsche Cayman S (Boxster coupe) looks sweet. It has 295 hp and costs about $65,000. Not sure of the weight, but less than a 911 or Boxster.
the elise is getting stronger and now they are plans to fit a supercharger to the Exige to make a 240bhp version! now tha defonatly looks interesting! also it cant be too long before people are fitting turbos to them to get similar if not more power on standard engines (if people are not already?????). and its not like the chassis cant handle the extra grunt!

If/when a Supra shows up, it'll be a corvette challenger - $50-75,000; a V8 pushing 400+ HP. Not the same league. Same goes for the RX7; turbocharging the Renesis rotary will yield 350+ hp; although the cost may stay low enough for some people to cross shop. Likewise for the forthcoming R35 GTR - big power, big money.
The S4 has gone towards being more of a luxury GT (competing with MB) and less of an M3 fighter, and conversely aimed at a different market, at least in my view.
The Elise is just an all around different type of vehicle. I don't forsee anyone cross-shopping these two cars; just magazine/car forum racing.

These Autoweek photos are more representative of all the Cayman S images I have seen.
Here's the latest blog about the Cayman S (305 HP) and rumored lightweight Club Sport edition.
