Tranny Abuse..How much can it take???

Well ive owned several different cars from all sorts and types etc.. all manual.. Ive dragged them, tracked them.. etc.. Ive very rarely missed a gear or scratched them at all. Well so far with my evo, ive scratched my gears serveral times and have missed a few times as well. Now i dont drag this car, i dont launch, or track it. Im very careful because I love my car and want it to last. I may in the future track it but thats all. Im really pissed when I push in the clutch and quik shift when more commonly than id like it misses or scratches. Ive come to the conclusion that this clutch doesnt just suck, it REALLLLY sucks.. So having scratched my gears sa few times not hard though.... how much abuse do you think this tranny can take. What signs to look for in the future for any damage? Anyone else have this happen with them too? The Evo looks like a short shifter stock, but the shifts are really long, thats one thing I noticed, and youve got to really have the clutch to the floor for proper engagements. I dont notice anything different with my car, but I am just generally concerned and will be driving my Evo like a girl until I replace this dahm clutch.

I sure hope he doesn't already need a new clutch.

I was having the same problem, grinding ,missed shifts, all the same things. I've noticed MUCH BETTER shifts, and clutch control ,after i remove the restrictor in the slave cylinder. When I replaced the rubber line with a S.S. clutch line. Just MY Recommendation before replacing the clutch.

I would recommend the shifter bushing kit for under hood and the shift console also, along with changing the tranny fluid to Syncromesh or the like and adding a SS clutch line. I have done all these except for the clutch line and I have not missed a shift yet since. It's a big improvement and not a lot of cash to do it. But I agree, the tranny does not like to be shifted fast, especially 1 to 2.

Recipe for shifting happiness:
  • Remove clutch restrictor
  • Install stainless steel clutch line
  • Replace rubber shift cable bushings with metal bushings
  • Replace rubber shifter bracket bushings with metal bushings
  • Install Kartboy short shifter
  • Install counterweighted shift knob

Is there a how-to for this clutch restrictor idea?

I haven't tried the short shifter yet, but the other steps have all helped some. No single step will be an instant fix.

One other point (for those who don't want to remove the restrictor) is that bleeding the clutch line may help. If a small amount of air has built up, it affects clutch feel and engagement.

What is our basic warranty anyway? 3 yr and the 10 yr thing? I forgot. Whats covered for how long. I figure eventually one of my synchros will go bad too. How long are they covered for?

Thanks

I agree with the others...

1. SS clutch line to get rid of that restrictor
2. Metal bushings on the tranny side
3. some good syncromesh or equvilant tranny fluid

There are two sets of bushings commonly installed: one set goes under the hood, the other set goes in the shifter bracket (in the center console).
