OK...I have owned my Evo for a year and a half and never really noticed my engine bay getting extremely hot. I mean, I know how hot it gets...but is there something that could be causing the engine bay to get extremely hot? I took about a 30 minute drive today and was in and out of boost but nothing overly prolonged. At stoplights, it just seemed there was more heat coming out that usual. I pulled into a store to get something to eat and walked by the front drivers fender and could feel the heat coming from the fender...as well as the hood vent.

I popped the hood and the whole bay was very very hot. I touched the upper intercooler piping(stock) and it all but burned my hand...Like I said, it was a 30 min drive barely boosting and in 70 degree weather. My coolant temps are normal. Is the upper intercooler pipe being that hot normal? Is there something that could be causing more heat than usual? ...or have I just been smoking too much crack?

 

Man you may need just to ake the dealership, sorry thats all i got

 

Welcome to turbo 4 bangers. My 93 TSI Talon went through 1 battery a year as it was cooked by the heat. Believe it or not, the Evo engine bay is much cooler with the vented hood and there should not be any abnormal effects. What your seeing is normal heat dissapation.

Welcome to summer. I drive in 110 degree heat here in Vegas and you cannot put your face over the engine to check something it's so hot. I removed my hood vent louvers to dissipate more heat when the car is sitting. It allows more air to escape. As long as the coolant temp is fine, don't be concerned.

 

I had a 94 Turbo Talon AWD and it got very hot also. It's just turbo 4 bangers produce alot of heat. I think my EVO runs cooler than my Talon did due to the hood vent letting some of the heat escape.

 

Well, thats good to hear. Last summer I didnt notice it getting as hot as it did tonight. Like I said, the upper intercoller pipe was all but untouchable as it was so freaking hot. It was only 70 degrees and it was that hot...I hate to see it at 100 degrees

 

The 4G motors are pretty good at producing a lot of heat.

 

When i got my Evo my girlfriend and i stopped at a rest stop on the highway. She went inside and when she came out i was idling at the curb. She walked up to the side of passenger side and got in and commented on how much heat my car was putting out. She noticed it and she didn't even walk by the hood. I like how you can see the heat rising out of the hood at redlights.

 

Get a digital thermometer probe at radioshack and put it under your hood. Try not to have a heart attack when you see exactly how hot it is under there. If you are squimish use Metric so the numbers look smaller.

 

I would suggest maybe some turbo wrap (looks like a padded space blanket) and some exhaust wrap.
I have not used it myself but most guys wrap the Manifold and up to the cat, trouble is I think that will just push the heat further down the exhaust, so you may notice tailpipe get hotter, which would result in melting the rear bumper some, although there are bumper guards you can buy to stop that, check out the pictures of the Red MR FQ320 he has a Carbon exhaust guard, I would make some enquiries about it though, check with the various tuners see what they say as it may affect various sensors etc although the ECU should cope with it,
but the guys who have done it swear by it.

 

It is amazing how much heat comes out of the hood vent at a light. It's like a George Foreman ready for grilling.

Like what everyone else has said, this engine runs pretty hot.

 

Wax your car and you can grill a steak, fry some eggs, and use your hood to eat off of.

I'd advise getting the RMR carbon fiber hood scoop. It might direct most of the air towards the intake, but at least its gettin some air flowin into the engine. Also, many carbon fiber hoods have a couple heat extractors instead of just one so keep those in mind.

 

The intercooler spray consists of two nosels, maybe I'll make one point to the radiator instead for extra cooling.
