hood vent and rain/carwash

one thing i noticed when i bought my car in march is that the hood vent isn't really shielded and when it rains, it seems like water can easily get in there. does this pose a risk to the engine? especially considering how hot it gets? what if water splashes on the hot engine and cracks the metal? is this even something to be concerned about.

another thing i've wondered is about the car wash machines at gas stations. is it safe to go through the no touch ones? i'm just worried that water might get forced through the vent. does anyone get their car washed in one of those, or do you do it all by hand. normally i wash my own car..but it would be nice to go to one of those just for quick cleanups. i took my car in some dirt the other day and got it pretty dusty and don't have time to wash it..it usually takes me a couple hours. i just want a quick fix till i can wash it properly.

I don't think they would have designed a car with a "can't get it wet" hood. After all it is a rally car...does it not rain on rallys?

I've used the no touch ones more than a few times with no problem. They design the vent so that the water doesn't drip directly on the engine. You're fine there. Just don't use the touch ones cuz it could rip the wing off or something.

When I took my evo to a car wash, it made my ECU through a Cam and Crank position sensor circuit code. The Connectors had gotten wet from the water coming threw the vent in the hood. The car was hard to start after it had gone through the wash. After the connectors dried out I reset the ECU and everything was okay.

I use the no touch wash all the time, never had a prob. i even have gone in without the vent. I just turn the engine off so I don;t suck up water through intake. never had a problem.

? Magnesium cover don't crack that easily, if it ever does.

I don't do drive in car wash, just because I think I'll get my intake filter wet and get water in my engine.

I wash it home. You should just take it to a handwash place. little bit more money but it's good. Those Drive in Carwash nevers gets the down part of my car.

If you use the no touch wash, just be careful if it has the guide rails
for your tires. The height of them can rub against your rims.
I've gone thru twice before, but its not worth it.
No problem the first time.
Second time, I had a couple little gouges on the front rim that went by the rails.

besides, it a half-*** job anyways...

i didn't think it would be a problem...i'm just paranoid about this car. and yeah..i know it is a crappy wash..but i basically just want it as an inbetween rinse before i get a chance to wash it myself. i have a bottle of maguire's quick detailer in the trunk but the car is super dusty. i saw a dirt road and couldn't resist

I've only used a touchless car wash once, but that was in the winter. When the sprayer got to the front of the car the engine surged. RPM shot up to about 2000, while at idle. I'm guessing it inhaled the mist. I don't know.

Man, carwashes are danger pits.. You can fall victim to all sorts of bad luck in those things.

Wash it by hand and keep plenty of wax on it. As for the engine, detail it once in a while and don't worry about a little watter.

I usually just throw a towel over the motor when I wash my EVO, and I don't directly spray water through the hood vent. I dont trust my car with an automatic car wash. I always wash it by hand.

I spray directly onto the vent. All it does is goes down to the exhaust manifold and to the ram air inlet.

it wets the sponge stuff on the ram air inlet.

u shouldn't have a problem with hood vent. I've driven it in rain and taken it thru touchless (brushless) car washes plenty of times and nothing has happened. the only thing u'll notice after coming out of the car wash is that ur wind shield will fog up from all the smoke that comes out of the vent....looks pretty cool and everyone stares at your car to figure out wtf happened to it
