Question Decat on My Evo.

Hi guys,

This is my first post so go lightly

Forgive me if this has already been posted but im from the uk and have been directed over this way by a couple of guys over on the British Evo forum (MLR).

I currently own an Evo 7 FQ300 and want to decat it. This is where the problem arises. I understand from the workshop manauls that there is an Oxygen sensor after the Catalytic converter nearer the backbox but there seems to be alot of controversy over which cars actually have them and what exactly they do. Thats why ive been pointed over here, the understanding is that you guys have them cos of the tight emission laws. Now i have looked on my car and there is definatly a sensor of some kind after the cat. Also there is one on the downpipe but that one isnt important as far as what i want to do.

Basically what happens if i replace the cat with a straight through pipe to get better breathing, will my engine management go nuts and start flickering on the dash?

Many peeps have told me to go ahead and it would be ok but my understanding is that the 02 sensor monitors that the cat is working, so if it is replaced it is no longer catalysing harmfull gases and thus the warning lights come on. Others have said to fit the sensor to another bit of pipe with an abundant O2 supply and attach it to the exhaust so it gets warm and problem solved!!

Sorry to babble on,

Hope you guys can shed some light

Cheers

Jono

Jono-
I have no idea what a UK-spec Evo exhaust setup is like, but i am positive that they are VERY similar. Taking out the cat will give you a check engine light. The solution to this is to install an emulator, like the Perrin exhaust comes with. I 'know someone' that has had one on their car since 1100 miles. There is now 3600 on the car, and they have experienced no problems at all.

Do a search under my name. I had a post a while back about where to purchase a CEL eliminator for a de-cat setup. The part costs $60 give or take, and it works without question. When tested, it even gives off fluctuating figures during data-logging, so no one will know the difference but you.

I believe the name of the company is casper electronics- do a search on www.google.com

this is what the product looks like. Looks like they are around $80 now.

Is your car a GSR or RS2? Not all "uk spec" Evos were rs2s (most common). Some GSRs were imported by colt cars from japan.

GSR=rear wiper, auto climate control, no post cat o2 sensor.
RS2=no rear wiper, manual climate control, 2nd post cat o2 sensor.

Cool

Hey there guys, thanks for the replies, cant believe how many views its got and hardly any responses.

Jemm
This is what im on about mate. My car isnt an imported car but sold by mitsi uk (colt car company) It is classed as a GSR (276 bhp) but with the official power hike upto 305bhp and 300ft/lbs its then known as the FQ300 but still in GSR guise. It doesnt have a rear wiper. It has manual air conditioning.

Everyone on the MLR seems to think that that the GSR has no sensor after the cat but mine does making it an RSII which is then classed as an import but its not. Confusing eh? The GSR's are the most common in the uk but i guess a few RS II's slipped through.

Serge

I will go do a search for the eliminator mate and gather abit more info on it. Thanks.

Will probably be back with a few questions

Thanks for all your help everyone

Jono
