Years ago I replaced my heater box levers. Back then the price for both (they are a set) was $15. I don't park under trees keeping trash from getting in the blend door. So, for me, this has been a complete fix.

same problem here, found it cheaper to just move the lever by hand under the dash

so today I decided to attack this project. I was getting tired of not using my temperature. It was very stiff and could not go to the heat side. I ordered the updated lever kit from mitsubishiparts.net. I just replaced the levers and cleaned and lube everything up and I am glad to say it is working.

I also put in the cabin air filter to prevent further problems.

The cable was kinked and i just took it off the cluster and used pliers to straighten it.

i think the problem was dirty tracks

^^^^^Excellent information, my problem is the bent cable too. When I get home I'll try cleaning the gears up and see if that works.

I just bought my Evo VIII and it is doing the same thing. I'm glad I searched. Mine is stuck on the cold side and won't quite turn to the halfway point. From those that have done it is the updated cable worth it or will cleaning and straitening out the original cable suffice?

The gears are the only thing that's updated. The cable you'll have to straighten out yourself.

I see. I took it apart today and the gears on the knob (dash) end moved freely. I was also able to move the cable by hand. It wasn't super easy but didn't feel like it was getting hung up either. However when everything is back together it is still really hard to turn past the mid point. Are the gears in question on the far end of the cable? Mine is an '05, btw.

I find that a good hard smack on the corner of the center console makes the lights work... Sometimes.

This is maybe the one thing I really hate on this car. The selector for the vents doesn't go all the way to either side and my temp knob broke off one cold morning so until I get a new setup I've been doing it manually under the dash, what a pita!

Figured this out yesterday on my new '03. This site has some awesome stickied information as long as you know how to search. Time for some revised gears for this guy

Ive had my Evo about 4 months now, and as much as I love finally having one, there are some things about this car that **** me off. This is one of them.

I ended up looking under the dash and finding the cable kinked like in the pictures, after I could no longer turn the knob to heat on 25* days....And whats funny is my car also has the problem with the climate control lights. The left side never turns on by itself, so its become habit....turn on the lights, smack the corner of the temp knob twice to get the light to come on. Hit a big bump, light goes out, smack again. Oh well, at least its the fastest thing in town. LOL.
